I'm sorry, but no way. I understand that there is a price premium for "original" craft, but the H12.5 sellers have lost their minds over the last 5-10 years. You could build 2 boats for that price and have enough left over to buy the super-spectacular digital camera to record the process for posterity.
This isn't directed at you Frenchie - thanks for thinking of the forum and making people aware.

The market seems to agree with you somewhat, Ethan. This boat was just up for auction on eBay and bids reached $12,800 and stopped. It's been relisted and is now at $11K plus. We'll see how high the bidding goes. http://tinyurl.com/37xon9

here in Annapolis theres a fleet of these actively racing. Most are the Joel White copies and they usually sell in the 20-25K range, so a real Herreshoff is worth at least that much....assuming you have the deep pockets.

Actually, $21K is a bargain for these boats. Within the last 2 years, I have seen 2 sell for over $30K. I guess it is a question of supply and demand. This one looks well maintained.
How do they justify competing with the Havens? The Haven's don't have a keel?
It's really interesting to see people trying to sell boats like this on eBay and craigslist - i.e. to the general public. I wonder whether these people simply don't know how to reach their best market or are too cheap to take out a decent ad in Wooden Boat and don't want to spend the time locating the class. If I were looking for a real H12 it wouldn't occur to me to start at eBay!

Seems there are one or two around that have been up for sale for awhile with a low to mid-20k price that haven't moved.
Don't get me wrong, I love the H12.5's. I would personally value possession of an original. But they were a production boat. One that can be easily replicated.
Ah hell, I hope the guy gets what he wants for it. Maybe I'm just irked cause it's past the depth I'm willing to dig into my own pocket.

Havens have a keel too, but it's got a slot cut in it for the centerboard.
People claim performance is pretty much identical, or at least close
enough for the sort of races they're likely to get into.

For 21k I'd buy it. I'd swear that particular boat used to be at Annapolis.

This same boat has been on EBay, a couple of times, I think.

I emailed with the owner. The boat has been in Oyster Bay for 5 years, Shelter Island before that, and Taxachussetts before that. I follow thes boats pretty closely. The price ranges are something like this: Completely restored, museum quality goes for $30K plus. Boats from the original 20 also go for over $30K. Boats that are in good condition but not flawless go from about $18K - $25K. Boats that need significant work go from about $8K to maybe $15K, depending. A rotting hulk can be had for around $4K. Judging by the photos of this boat, I think the $21K is a really good price. No sistered ribs, good transom, etc.
