A question in the rumregatta thread got me thinking.

In Germany since the times of the Imperial Navy large ship's boat where always Marinekutter (Navy Cutter) or also called KIIK (Cutter Class II).
I former times the Navy also had a couple of different size boats such as Captains Gig, Jollyboat and a little KIK.

How about the large ship's boat of other countries Navy?

The Royal Navy had the following more or less standard sizes of boat, going back many many years:

1. Launch: Carvel built, 35ft+ LOA, heavily built, used to take out anchors, etc. Captain Bligh was set adrift in HMS "Bounty"'s launch.

2. Cutter: very much like your picture, same construction, same stern, same rig.

3.(in the 20th century) Montagu whaler, double ended, lapstrake, 27ft, rigged for sailing with lugsails and a centreplate.

4. (Earlier) Gig, about the same size, a fast narrow lapstrake pulling boat

5. Jollyboat, lapstrake, about 18ft
