Getting close to needing paint for my Whilly Boat. Wanted to try Kirby's because of the look (low gloss, etc.). Haven't been able to get any response from Kirby's either through email or snail mail so am looking for an alternative. Found a satin alkyd enamel at Lowe's made by Olympic. Anybody tried it? Any sucessful uses of other brands? The boat will be used mainly in freash water and will reside on a trailer when not in use.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
I built and launched a Steve Redmond ELVER 23 years ago. At the time I was basically broke and shuddered at the thought of paying big bucks for a gallon of "marine" paint. Instead, I ended up going to my local hardware store, buying a gallon of SICO PREMIUM ALKYD paint(which was on sale at the time for 19.99/gallon) and read the label. This was supposed to be their top shelf exterior house paint, apparently designed to resist the elements for years to come.
Figuring that my boat will be "in the elements" too I went ahead and used it. With a good prep sanding and wash down with TSP, wouldn't you know it,the darned painted lasted 9 years before the next owner figured it was time for a colour change.
Mind you,up here in Montreal, my sailing season can be stretched to 5,almost 6 months before everyone comes out and the sun does not hit us so directly as someone nearer the equator.Nopr do I sail in salt water BUT the boat did spend the entire season in the water each year.
At anyrate, I suppose it may well depend on your budget, your sailing area and just how spiffy you you want your hull to look.
Hopefully, better informed"local" folk will render appropriate advice.
Good luck.

I just called Kirby's on the phone when I wanted paint , as they seem rather low-tech otherwise.George Kirby Jr Paint Co (http://www.kirbypaint.com/)

Thanks for the replies, guys. I have a problem using the phone due to tinnitus. Sending a letter (complete with color chips) seems about as low tech as you can get.
