Copper bottom - how's to know if water's getting in behind there and making a mess of things??

I recall an article he wrote about the coppering of this boat. The planking is very heavy and the boat bottomed out dry in her berth every tide. IIRC he set the copper plating in heavy tar and cloth of some kind. Used the boat for years as a liveaboard, I think.

I remember reading one of his articles in the old Small Boat Journal magazine. He said that he used his collection of National Geographic magazines as inside ballast.

If one did not treat the planks or If one did not bed the copper then fresh water behind the plates could be a problem ........

Don't forget copper is a poison. It's toxic to many organisms, micro and otherwise. It may inhibit rot behind the plates due to the water being trapped there and in touch with the copper, through the felt and tar, for a considerable time.

This is something I should be sure of, but I'm without personal experience. Anyone care to fill me in?
