As some may have noted, there will be a Forum get together at Beaton's on Barnegat Bay on Thursday, July 26th. Originally it was called the Mid-Atlantic WBF Regatta, but for now it'll just be the BBEBS.

So far Joe(CSOH), Phill Heffernan, Jim and Tracey Ledger and a few others have expressed interest. We hope to have some boats show up as well otherwise it'll be crowded on Sjogin.

We chose a Thursday to avoid the weekend afternoon motor boat traffic, which is more than some people (me) can take.

Beaton's is located in West Mantoloking, NJ about 50 miles south of NYC. There's good sailing, with a usually reliable sea breeze (not today however). Just south of the yard is a nice stretch of salt marsh and creeks to explore. Further south is Silver Bay and Applegate Cove with a few nice beaches to stop and swim.

Here's a link (http://www.sjogin.com/?page_id=12) to a page of Beaton's pics on my site. Here's a pic taken this morning showing my sailing grounds:

Let me know if you can join us and bring a small boat. Beaton's will be able to launch a few that morning.

See you on the Bay,

Russ

A cats in Toms River, a couple miles South, all the time. I am sorry its Thursday, work interferes, I would have brought my trawler up.

Back in the mid-60s, when I was in 3rd grade or so, we had a class trip to Beatons to watch them build wooden boats. I think thats where I got the bug.

By the way, the Toms River Wooden Boat Festival is Saturday, July 14: http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070710/NEWS02/707100359/1070/ENT

Joe,

PM on its way.

Pat,

Beaton's is still hosting the occasional school class. When I worked there it was a treat to watch Tom Beaton explain the vagaries of wooden boat building. Sorry you can't make it but you know what Summer weekends are like on the Bay; thus the mid-week date.

Bump.

So far Joe(CSOH), Phil Heffernan, Jim and Tracey Ledger plan on joining me on the waters of Barnegat Bay next Thursday, July 26th. Don Onley and a few other expressed interest. Anyone else care to join us? Hopefully with boats? I'll bring down my Mill Creek 15 to paddle about and of course sails on Sjogin. Any other paddlers out there within a reasonable day trip drive to the Jersey Shore?

Hey Lefty, now that the LTP event is off, how about bringing down your boat?

Thad, are you bringing Ivy up?

Hi Russ,

I'm on vacation this week in Montery Beach. If I am not called back into work, I would like to join in. I could bring a WeeLassie an/or an "Ellen" that rows better then she sails ;-)

What time should we plan on arriving?

Regards,

Mark

Mark and all,

Lets' plan to be at Beaton's by 10:00. I'll be down earlier getting ready. (Read icing down some beer and soda.) The sea breeze usual starts around 11:00 or so. Bring your own lunch, I'll take care of drinks.

Needless to say this is all weather dependent though now that summer has settled in we will probably just have thunderstorms to worry about later in the day. Of course there are worse things to do then sitting around Beaton's on a rainy summer day looking at boats and having your choice of beverage at hand.

Hope to see you next week.

Phil,

Will you and Joe be able to bring your skiff down? Jim Ledger is bringing his Nutshell and I'll have my double paddle canoe as well.

Weather looks reasonable for Thursday with a good sea breeze likely. Chance of T-storms but the afternoon Southeasterly usually keps them inland from the Bay.

Has anyone heard from Thad Van Gilder? He said at one point he would bring Ivy up.

Best,

Russ

Joe(CSOH), Phill Heffernan and Jim Ledger are due today for an EBS and a sail on Sjogin. I'm certain there'll be IPhone shots from Joe. Let's hope the sailing gods are kind and we have fair winds and limited power boat traffic.

Forecast is for SSE winds at 10 to 15 kt, partly cloudy. Should be about 80 or so, somewhat humid. Report to follow.

Bring a rain jacket just in case. We should dodge anything serious but we could see a stray shower this afternoon.

Holy moly Joe Leone's has to be one of the all time best Italian deli's

Joe started a new thread here (http://http://www.woodenboatvb.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?p=1622489#post1622489). The gods were kind and we all had a perfect day. Wind about 6 to 10 from the SE which kept all the crappy weather to leeward. High clouds, humid but very pleasant. Joe and Phil brought lunch from Joe Leone's, (http://http://www.joeleones.com/) the best local Italian Specialty store (the interior shots above).

Hove to more times than Joe wished but sometimes it's great to be the Skipper. Went south to Hankin's Island and on to Applegate Cove where we hove to on Starboard to have lunch. Stayed on that tack too long and ran very slightly aground. With the considerable moveable ballast on board, a tack and a shift to leeward got us off and on up the bay. A great day sail; glad I could share it with Joe, Phil, Jim and Mark.

Thanks Scot for making all this possible. Yea WBF.

Thanks, Russ, for a most enjoyable day. Sjogin is a beautiful boat and a pleasure to sail.

I would be delighted to return the hospitality aboard the Sea Rover sometime in the near future.

Thanks

Jim,

That would be great; let's set up a date. The Long Island Maritime Museum has a collection of Schweisguth drawings and correspondence that I'd like to go through. He was the designer of the Beaton A-Cats.

Speaking of A-Cats, the Beaton Trophy and A-Cat worlds are to be held at Beaton's on September 30th. Let's set up another sail on Sjogin to watch.
