View Full Version : WTF? OMG, OMFG - What a treasure!

I went upstream about 100 metres from where I have my small boat on the marina and found this gem. Hopefully that list will continue to grow - rapidly:

... and just opposite:

At least this one has an excuse - it is the plug that a boat was built on that someone decided would make a "nice" houseboat. It's a bit flimsy! I tried to get a few of the kids to buy it a few years back as a cheap place to have a bit of fun (it isn't mobile unless towed).

To correct any mis-impressions about how ugly this end of the river is - 50 metres away:

Even uglier....

I especially like the sensitive fibreglassing of the deckhouse and the addition of a "Charley Noble" for the (no-doubt) eco-friendly stove.

Collected this off the net a few years back but I don't (thankfully) remember the provenance. One does need to sleep.

But you've got to love the frills on that top one!

The term I like for this is "water tumor". We have to operate now!!!!

That first boat doesn't look all that bad if one considers a very limited set of use scenarios. That nifty roof mounted den of sin certainly would provide for gorgeous panoramic views of ones environs, as mountings of another type are committed , all the while providing good shelter from an otherwise burning sun and evil flying bugs with a thirst for human blood. Anchoring well up a creek or river and boxed in a bit with the right type of geology, would allow for the production of some rather thought provoking echos in the wee hours as the mountings continue unfettered by prying neighbours.
Thanks for the pictures!

That is not a charlie noble. It is just a vent pipe.
a charlie nobile has a single verticle pipe and a horizontal on top with two pipes at 45 degree angle on each end of the horizontal.
You can see an example in Howard chappelle's "BOATBUILDING"

Vince, that is an exceptionally fugly boat. The foredeck looks like it's going around a corner.

WX, I agree. But if it hadn't been distorted by the camera lens there'd be even more of it to abhor. Astoundingly fugly, innit?

Don, you're quite correct. Henceforward we shall refer to this as a "Charlie Plebeian".

Nice one Jim. Where do you keep her? Isn't the prop just a bit small for that size boatus?

JimD
07-18-2007, 03:11 AM
I used to keep her parked on the street in front of the house but somebody complained. I dunno why. The prop doesn't actually turn since the engine doesn't work. So now I just pole her around the swamp. Cathy thinks I should get rid it. She just doesn't understand a man's bond with his boat.

JimD that is amazing, straight out of the 70s. I particularly like the front loader washing machine jutting out of the hull....and is that an old torpedo attached to the port bow?

This sweetheart is a livaboard dream. How many other designs this size have a washer and dryer? We got the torpedo idea from watching The African Queen, although the explosive payload has been removed. Sorry I don't have any interior shots of the shag carpet. Its really...

I like it! Live upstairs and then get up and serve barbeque downstairs.

Don: having the barbie going on the "main deck" would certainly contribute to fewer mosquitos in the living accommodations, but at what cost?

Ooohhh I dont know ;) ...people have been suggesting we do away with a house as such and build a houseboat here on Dingo Creek for some time now and that I reckon would be nigh on perfect as such
