Most of you who pay attention to my rambling conversations remember that I had, for health/economic reasons, suspended design activities for a job teaching (gasp!!) composite technology at a local Community College. Well, things change...
I have just posted my resignation to the College administration. I am going back to doing real work again - I have accepted the contract offer from a regional shipyard to manage the building of a substantial aluminum boatbuilding project.
I cannot begin to describe to you how good it feels to be back building boats!
(Just thot I'd share...)
Excellent....congratulations!

Well done! :)
I have made a terrible blunder.
My original (now edited) posting, intended to share my pleasure at landing a desired contract, upon reflection could be misconstrued as being self-promotional here on the WBF.
I didn't mean it that way; I was just hoping to share some good news with friends. But , as I feel strongly about honouring the rules of the Forum and feel that I have inadvertantly overstepped the boundaries of proper engagement, I would humbly like to ask my friends here to edit out their references to my original posting so that my error may be expunged from the record.
I will send an e-mail to Scot immediately to alert him to my mis-post.
Thanks, all.
Michael

Congratulations. I know all too well how hard it is being away from what you feel at home doing. I took a 5 year break from metal fab to chase the bigger paycheck. Like a fish out of water.

Details please....
Best.... Ian

If telling us you got a new job is self-promotion or "a terrible blunder... overstepping bounds" then heaven help us!
I'd be very interested to know what drove you away from teaching. I was very encouraged when you said you were developing a composites program. Someone with your range of experience and outlook is desperately needed for that challenge.
Nonetheless, congratulations and best of luck with the new work!

I, personally, read it the way that you had intended it to be read. No foul.

Absolutely agree with Paladin, no foul. Congratulations on a happy decision, we don't get to make many of them of this magnitude.

All the best.

Great news, & best of luck to you Michael! (Though I know you don't need any 'luck'. :) )
Since this thread has grown legs of its own, I guess I'd be rude to not answer the questions that have been posed.
rbgarr, I am leaving teaching due to what I percieve as management issues over the administration of the program. I believe that if you look at a problem close enough and long enough, you will realize that you are part of the problem. I am at an impasse in getting done what I believe needs to be done, and by staying longer I will just exacerbate the problem. Maybe my departure will galvanize the powers that be to effect change in the program administration, and fresh blood erases old disputes. I didn't achieve all my goals in setting up the Composites Fabricator Technician Program (which I regret), but it is time to move on.
Ian, the first project is a 65-foot aluminum fire-fighting/emergency response boat for an American client. It is a design from a well-known design office that specializes in small workboats such as tugs and fireboats. I expect very few design issues during the build. Build time is tentatively estimated at twelve to fifteen months.

You are a knowledgeable fellow who should be the sort whom academia actively seeks out..And they did...Unfortunately, it seems that academic politics seem to trump talent, or at least makes it difficult to do the work...
Those who can, do...
Best in the new endeavor...

I don't see a foul, either. If you read the old, old issues of WB, the purpose of the magazine was to help continue the industry in whatever way. Good for you.

Same here, but then who am I to talk ;) :D

I agree, no foul. You aren't selling nor advertising anything, but rather announcing a change in status of your life, which I think is definitely cricket in the People and Places section. "Inquiring (nosey) minds want to know." :D

I can't see any problem with your posting. Even coming from the city I know aluminum doesn't grow on trees (where I believe wood comes from)

Congratulations, mmd!
I expect we'll be seeing status and pictures of the build? ;) It ain't self promotion, it's great stuff on this forum.
If folks hereabouts have an interest, I'll post photos & commentary as the project goes along. Can't do much right now 'cause 1.) I ain't there yet, and 2.) there are some legal impediments regarding disclosure at this moment. I expect those to disappear in due time.
