Mahone Bay Classic Boat Show

Today was the opening day for the Festival. Here are some pictures from the Parade of Sail. The lead boat is a Robin L24 designed by Bill Lutwick, a local boatbuilder in Indian Point. It is a 24 foot gaff rigged center board day sailer with a 7 foot beam. It is planked of white pine on white oak frames. Bill says that he based her on the lines of the Tancook sloop. That is Bill himself at the helm.

whats that black hulled boat?

Tim, the black hulled boat is "Argonaut". I'm not sure of the designer, but she was built in the early 1900's. She was dismasted in the Classic Boat Race held as part of the Festival a couple of years ago and now, unfortunately, sports an aluminum spar. She's a beauty.

Makes me ache from missing it. Greetings to all my friends in NS, Jane misses it too. We're very busy here, but I still sail my canoe occasionally, and work on my yawl weekly. Maybe next year.....

Thanks for the reminder. I was priviledged to go on the boat yard tour last year and that 24 footer was a half model on Bill's drawing board then. We got to chat a bit about designing and it was refreshing to hear someone describe the "old" way. Carve a hull eye sweet, then take the offsets from it. Not a computer in sight!
