I would have liked to attend but missing youngest son's wedding for a boat show seemed a little to far out, even for my level of complusion.

Does anyone know if a video of his talk is available?

I asked Scot about it the next day and he said several folks had asked. It wasn't so much a video of the talk, but one that he had prepared and that was shown. It was quite fascinating - cat and all. ;)

E-mail Scot or more likely Mr. Bolger.

I also wish I could have attended. Is there a transcript of what took place? A report? Perhaps WoodenBoat could do an article about the event for the benifit of those of us who couldn't make it in person. I for one am interested in anything Bolger has to say, and in what is said about him.

Bolger is not online and may not have a phone.

At the dinner most of what he said in person involved explaining why several people were still waiting on their designs to be completed because he and his wife had been commisioned by the U.S. Navy to design beach assault boats. He showered great praise on his wife for her work on the project and said that she had done the majority of the work. The video that he and his wife (somebody please help me with her name!?) showed was very simply edited and yes there were places where the cat stole the show by walking over the scrapbook of designs that Phil was talking about page by page.

I am a very big Bolger fan and have many of his books that I pour over on a regular basis. I bought my tickets for the dinner two months in advance and enjoyed every minute of it (including the cat). The best part of the tribute dinner was getting to talk with Phil Bolger one-on-one before the dinner outside the restaurant. I got to show him a dory catamarran model that I had build about twenty years ago. He said it reminded him of his oyster shell hauler and that he liked it. Wow!!! That was neat.

The other neat thing about the tribute was the many designers and editors that came forward to praise Phil for his work – especially for his originality and imagination. It was great to see someone receive in person the praise and admiration for a huge and inventive body of work that is Phil Bolger's. The food was really good too!

Ok, I like the talks, I like the dinner, I liked getting to see some of his designs. However, the video had me hiding in the lady's room thinking, "Dear God please let it be over."

The cat did not always present its best side towards the camera:rolleyes:.

I would have liked to have been there to meet him... hell I would have liked to have been there PERIOD!!!... sigh... had the ticket organized (thanks Carl) even had my heart set on ordering the plans for St Valery of him right there... but it wasnt to be. :(

Hes an interesting charector with a hell of a long list of designs to his credit... and not all boxes either!... mind you his missus is apparently a designer herself although Ive not seen anything of her work... must be an oversight eh?

Ive lost track of how to contact him... can someone put up his address and contact details?... oh and if possible since I dont have a fax or access to one for that matter would someone mind giving him a hoi for me and find out what SVs plans costs and how best an Aussie would cough up the cash for them? would be greatly appreciated!!

Kenjamin,

I think a forum member built Bolger's catamaran 'oyster shell hauler'.

I once mailed a typed inquiry asking about the capabilities of one of his designs. His prompt reply was hand-written on the bottom of my letter.

As a long-time, satisfied owner of both a Dovekie and a Shearwater, as well as one who has lusted after both Snow Leopard and Blackbird, I've kept that note, even though I never pursued interest in the design in question.

In one of the more ironic moments of the dinner, one of the speakers (Sam Devlin maybe?) was commenting on Mr. Bolger's letter writing and the quality of same as compared to "today's drunken blatherings on internet forums" :o:o:eek:

It is safe to say that the folks at our table exchanged guilty looks and sunk a little lower in our chairs..... :o

Don't get me wrong. I am a huge Bolger fan. I was looking through my Bolger boats last night trying to find Shane's St. Valery (no luck in Small Boats, Different Boats, and Boats with an Open Mind) and of course I got side tracked reading about boats similar to St. Valery.
What I noticed (again) is that Bolger will identify a flaw or a weakness in a design and then say something like some more work needs to be done to correct the problem. So you're left hanging wondering what that work would involve. We all babble. It's really what makes this forum entertaining. Blather proudly!
