I always had my share of spiders on my Catalina C25, but this new/old boat is crawling with them. What can I do to get rid of them? Cheers.

I use spider spray.

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd, to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey
Along came a spider
And sat down beside her
Oh Gawd, she ate him too!

Seriously, what kind are they? Black Widows, Brown Widows, and the Brown Recluse all like dry dark places (like the inside of a boat). I've had Brown Widows (relatives of the Black Widow) in my shop, and in boats under construction. Ordinary bug spray should kill them, though if they are harmless "house" spiders you might leave them to catch the roaches.

I give mine names. My old BMW motorbike also has some resident 'extreme sport' spiders.

I use digital control. When I see a spider I apply one or more of my ten digits to her, firmly and with considered speed.

Every month, I set off an insect "fogger" can in my workshop and it takes care of my spiders. I bet one of these would do the same with a boat's interior. Try to find one that claims not to leave a residue.

Try 'BENGAL' Roach Spray - kills spiders better than anything I've ever found. It used to be a staple at one of our local harbors until the hardware store that sold it went out of business. I just recently found it again at a commercial lumberyard.

The wasps that get into my boat seem to keep the spiders at bay.

I tried a product from Bayer a couple of years ago that was supposed to be for indoor use. It worked, but I've never really felt too good about becoming a part of someone's idea of a science experiment. Then again, if you're going to be off the boat for a few days, it may be OK.

If you grab with two fingers about a half inch beind them, you'll likely get a piece of web, and you can float them off in the wind, which is kinda' fun the first few times. The spear gun proved to be over kill, but it's fun everytime... Best bet, train your kids to become entomologists. Pay 'em 5 cents a piece (and teach them what a brown recluse looks like... nasty, nasty critter).

Many birds eat spiders.

I generally ignore them these days - just use a finger if they are in front of me. I was trying to keep them off the boat, but if you look up on a sunny day you can see them drifting down from the hill above the boat. They come down on a thread of web about 6' long. They are a fairly small species that I get.

Another way to get rid of most spiders is to get one really big spider.

Take the fruit of the 'Oshage Orange' tree - commonly called Hedge Apples here in Indiana, put them where the spiders are - the spiders will disapear - At least it works on land.

One medium sized cat should do the trick just fine.
