Will you also be aboard for the Faulkner race in October?

Nice job Jack, I had you pegged for at least a decade younger

Well the seniors did it again.

We came in first on corrected time in the "Around Falkners race" last sat.

29 boats participated. It was a crowded start

So..... do you suppose that "Mule" gave you 11 minutes on that last leg? ;)

The start felt pretty good to me...

(speaking of senior citizens, that little blue boat out in front is 48 years old, oldest in the fleet by at least a decade)

Viewers, That's Mike skippering "Figment" the first boat in this image.:D

Actually Mike it was debatable:confused:. On the last half hour of the race that sail slowed us down. It caused weather helm slowing us. We debated taking it in but thought the fuss it would make we'd loose more time.

The "mule" is a difficult sail to set and lower for us ole pharts at least.:(
However we did come in first on corrected time so I guess we did the right thing.:D

I need to get a closer look at that mule in action. It's hanked onto the backstay and sheeted to the head of the mizzen? Does it have a little wishbone boom like the jib of a knockabout?

Nah, you won that one with the mizzen staysail. You rounded the green at least 10-15 minutes ahead of me, and I couldn't make it up on the last leg.

Speaking of the mizzen staysail.... next time you're converging on someone with that sail flying, pass to LEEWARD. An unfriendly competitor would've had you eating that staysail with a luff. :D

Great pictures Figment, they are of a professional quality, the one of the beautiful young woman by the companionway is magazine cover stuff.

You're getting to be "The man to beat" JD.

Top result JD, good to see.

It really is good knowing that as we age as sailors and if good health remains on our side, that competitive sailing is one of the few sports that we can continue to do well at at a reasonably high level.

It was only a few years ago, I was looking up to the National Champions Peter Smith, Trevor Imoff and getting flogged by both of them and admiring Grahme Dennett's abilities on the water in big winds and all their beautiful boats ... yesterday my Skipper Lee Neilsen and I, had all three of them follow us home in shocking racing conditions during an ACT interclub regatta.

It is the final race of our Territory inter club regatta today. We are leading our Div by one point. Grahme Dennett (the 2007 National Hartley 18 Champion) is an excellent big wind sailor and might ruin our day today, although we hope not. He was running us down going for home yesterday, covering him was doing little to stop his surging. We were totally overpowered in the wind on the last leg so we cut behind an island for shelter while he stayed out in the big winds. Tactically, running for shelter was a good move as we watched Skipper Dennett and crew getting hammered, while we pulled away from them in slightly calmer conditions.

Yesterday was not a day for novices flying kites, the loads were huge, a few boats couldn't drop spinnakers and payed dearly ... if the wind howls again today, even better. The big off the beach cats yesterday were going ballistic, and the Sharpies were just as fast when they weren't pitchpolling. I saw one Formula 16 Skipper, possibly Bill Chadwick depart from his boat using a parachute. He was far too high to jump into the water without slowing his fall.

It takes years to learn to sail well ... I look forward to keeping my Skippers on track over the next few decades.

Warren.
