It's that time of year again. Labour Day Weekend (Canadian spelling). We'll be checking in Thursday afternoon. There's also a rendezvous for wooden yachts at Brentwood Bay Marina on Wednesday and Thursday, just before the opening bell at Victoria.
Rita will be at both events; open for boarding or as party central. Who's coming?

I'll be there aboard Martha, then on to Deer Harbor and Port Townsend.

I wish! Maybe next year....
This year you'll just have to take tons of pictures so the rest of us can enjoy your beautiful boats and scenery!
- M
So I happened to be at Cowichan Bay this evening and spotted this dazzling beauty. Say, that name looks familiar:

Not this year, Lew, we've sailed down to Sausalito and are bound south this winter. I did really want to visit the various Gardner powered boats though, for ideas....

Well, Nanoose, looks like it's just the four of us.
Cathy and I made it to Victoria on Thursday to stop in on Lew and Lindy. When we found them Lew was busy shining up Rita after a windy trip down the coast to Victoria Harbour. I had another picture of him wearing his characteristic warm smile but this grimmace shows just how serious the skipper is about keeping Rita covergirl perfect :D

They graciously welcomed us aboard and soon we were joined by fellow forumite Bo and his lovely better half Cathy (my apology if it's properly spelled with a 'K'). Left to right are Cathy (Mrs JimD), Lew, Lindy, Bo, and bathed in spiritual glow on the right is yours truly (its best not to look at my face directly, anyway). Bo's Kathy (my apology if its correctly spelled with a 'C') is on the other side of the camera.

We'll head down this weekend. Can't wait!

Sunday was overcast, but it didn't seem to keep many people away from the docks. Last time I saw that many people was in Disneyworld...
Here's a view of Victoria's inner harbor (provincial parliament buildings in the background). Empty slips!?!? The sail boats are out for a race.

From the top of the dock you can see some fine examples of craftsmanship and EXTREME varnishing.

From Victoria, a number of the fleet head to Deer Harbor for the show there, and then Pt. Townsend for their show next weekend.
A great time - especially our visit with Lew and Lindy.
Here's to next year! Nanoose will be "ready" for the show (ha! Who am I kidding!??!?! But, she'll be there regardless.)
Thanks for the update, Nanoose. It was nice to see Sweet Pea, a little painted boat overshadowed by all the big brightwork but I see her a lot in Cow Bay. She's an Atkin design and a very shippy little 19 feet with around 4 feet draught. She originally had an inboard engine which has been replaced with an outboard. The Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre owns her but I don't know if there are any plans to put a little deisel inboard back in.

DLC beat me to it..... They're a permanent stabilizer (as opposed to cable mounted ones hung off lowered trolling poles - typical of commercial trollers) and can reduce roll dramatically. There's virtually no downside to having them, unless you're a gillnetter trying to hop a net :)

Even when motoring? Doesn't slow you down/create more drag, etc?

Just jumped in here. We've been "netless" since Victoria and won't be home until tomorrow night, and then I'll get my photos up. They'll include the wildest interior ever devised for a former BC forestry boat, as well as some interiors of the Dawn "Sunrise" and a few others.
This was a very laid back Victoria event, and even moreso for us because we don't compete (get judged) there anymore. Great to see the 'nooses again and to meet Jim, (who we rerally met at Cowichan)Bo, the Kathys and everybody else.
We left early Monday with plans to go to Dear Harbor today, but the weather was so drippy we called it quits and started for home after crossing the border at Roche Harbor and spending the night at Garrison Bay. We crossed the Straight of Juan DeFuca (it has another, less polite name) in total fog. The only benefit was flat water. Not eventful, but very tiring and the concentration required was complete.
As we approached Port Townsend, we decided to call it good and duck in for the night, so this is where I'm posting from. Needless to say, as soon as we paid the moorage, the sky lifted and the sun came out. We'll be heading back to Seattle tomorrow, where I'll open a new photo hosting account and get some shots up.
I bet they're having fun at Deer Harbor!

Oh...Jim's "unknow" boat, the all bright baby communter, is Kay DeeII and she won "Best Restored Powerboat" honors at the show.
I have some interior shots of her; she's a doll. The boat with the bat wings is Summer Star and she's purty too.

Even when motoring? Doesn't slow you down/create more drag, etc?
Nope. But they're usually used on 7 or 8 kt boats. If you want to go faster, anything becomes drag.
I've never used them - just seen them. I've used normal "hanging" stabilizers before and they work wonders when you're rolling - wouldn't be without them if I was heading out into open water on a regular or semi-regular basis. They only work when you're going slow as they have to fly. The rigid ones would be advantageous in many ways I'd think.
Actually - I ran an old commercial 30' Farrell with "bat wings" added at the chines. I guess they were supposed to have an effect similar to the rigid staby's. The Farrell only had an 8' beam and several of it's bretheren rolled over, so these were added as an after thought. But it was a spooky handling boat at the best of times. No idea how it was without them.

Great photos, folks. Jim, you seemed to have had the only sunny day, even if half the boats had yet to arrive. My Cathy is also with a C by the way.
Lew and Lindy, I'm still reeling with all the tips and advice that came my way in a few short conversations, not to mention with the way you've cared for Rita. What a stunning vessel! It's great to finally have some faces with the names. Sunday's "race" was a mirror-water photo op at best, called just when Waxwing was leading division II... damn! We motored to Sidney Spit that night, then back to Salt Spring after waiting for fog to lift (I'll consider what you said about radar).
For anyone wondering, Waxwing is the last of Jim D's photos before Trekka... a fine vessel we dearly love, but hardly a showstopper among that company. I'm never sure whether I'm inspired or depressed when I return from the Victoria show... maybe something in between.

You have no excuses to make for Waxwing, Bo. She's a honey and a tough boat, sensible and comfortable layout too, with a ton of room and nice spaces. I took a bunch of pictures of her and I'll get them up as soon as I'm able.

Thanks for the pics. I've been after Margo to arrange a charter next year for the East Coast Forumites to head west for the Victoria/Port Townsend shows. THE WoodenBoat Show will be in Mystic again next year but we sure would like to check out yours some day.
Thanks again,

Two things. This is my first crack at Photobucket, so we'll see how that goes. And then, these are just some teasers of one boat. I took hundreds of shots at the show, including a couple of Bo and Kathy and Waxwing. I need to get them hosted and then posted, but it will take a couple of days. Meanwhile, how's this stuff for over the top?
Taken on Castle Rock, former Canadian Forestry vessel. Sixty Five feet of tough boat with these exquisite carvings everywhere. Work done by David Thompson of Vancouver, BC.
Well, some big images then! I have many more of Castle Rock, which I'll work on over the next few days, as well as some stunning boats, power and sail, inside and out, and even a couple of forumite shots. Stay tuned as this thing gets more pics!

Peter, off to get a fresh supply of napkins for the deluge........
Nicely done Lew, thanks for taking and sharing the pics. Sorry I couldn't make it this year.

I'm gonna make this easy for you and Annie Roger. Next year you take the clipper up, stay with us on Rita, then go to Deer Harbor and we all go home together. You don't make a big fuss and nobody gets hurt!
For anyone wondering, Waxwing is the last of Jim D's photos before Trekka... .
Bo, can you say a bit more about Waxwing? What design, etc?
Edited to add: I shoulda read the captions to Lew's pics. Alden, correct?
Holy, Lew! Those are some photos. I gotta take a few minutes here and have a closer look.

What a special surprise to see this one, Lew.
We know this boat very well. One of our liveaboard neighbors when we lived aboard was a fellow named Bill - maybe in his 60's - retired - single all his life. He shared his boat with his dog, Duchess. A few slips down from Bill was where his dad kept his boat, Mischief.
The story on Mischief is that when Bill was about 15 or so, and starting to get into all kinds of trouble in school and everywhere else, his dad said, "C'mon", took him into the back yard, and they started building a boat together. If I remember right, 'dad' was a shipwright. A few years later, Mischief was launched. His dad knew more about wooden boats than anyone in the marina. He'd come out every week to start her up...he was in his 80's at that point - didn't take her out much, but tended to her really well.
One year on haul out, there were a bunch of planks on the starboard side that needed replacing, so Bill and his dad - in his 80's - went at it. Wonderful to watch. Amazing craftsmanship. I remember when they relaunched her about 3 weeks later....pop was on board with a lot of pumps going. I think he spent the night on her to make sure everything was ok.
We've only seen Bill a couple of times since we sailed away and returned...I don't know if his dad is still living. Mischief has a new set of colors...makes me think dad is gone and she's been sold to a new caretaker.
A great boat, made to a great standard and lovingly cared for for at least 50-55 years by her builder.
Thanks for that pic.

That's all I have of her this year, but I usually focus on the ones that catch my eye, and she looked nice and tidy and just the thing WBFers would enjoy. A compact and able package. Glad it suited you my dear!
Added: great name for her given the story behind the boat.

A bit random, these. If you want the whole sad bunch, you can visit them here, but the better ones have already been picked off for this post.

Sorry to take so long, Lew and Jim D, but yes, my mouth was agape. First weeks of school make the festival seem so long ago, and getting any forum time has been problematic.
Fantastic pictures, Lew! You seem to have seen a lot more of the show than I did, but I'm glad you had the camera.
And Jim, Waxwing is an Alden design originally from 1945, updated a few times and I suspect was drawn more under his eye than his hand, as the drawings have various employee signatures up to about 1953. It's called a "Little Tramp" in the book John Alden and his Yacht Designs, I guess matching the design number to some other reference, but actually there's no such name on any of the drawings. Cheoy Lee did a few (25?) in f---glass, gave them an extra 2 feet, and called them the "Alden 32." Nice boats, if you want to sail in petrochemicals, and the only local one I've seen is one from Seattle named White Cloud. There's a wooden sister moored up at Manson's Landing on Cortes, and it's called Electra of Beaulieu. British-built, and altered with higher raised deck and less glass, so it actually crossed the Atlantic with shuttered-up wheelhouse.
Thanks again, Lew and Jim, for the pictures, and I hope you keep them within reach of the forum so I can come back to that weekend in the dead of winter. Maybe by then I'll have figured out Lew's instructions to post pictures here, and I'll have that profile view.

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing. I see the Glorybee attended...any idea how long they took to get to Victoria from Seattle and if they had any troubles? I've wanted to attend in the Frienship II, but I didn't want to take 4 weeks off from work to get there and back at a reasonable pace :)

Jennie, I don't know what GloryBe's transit time was, but once through the locks, it's very possible to make Victoria from Seattle in one day, especially if that day supposes good (flat) seas in the Strait.
A timed passage from Seattle, with the currents in your favor, allow for an easy 8 hour transit, even at seven knots or so. Of course, one has to add three or four hours if coming from Commencement Bay. The time required is largely a function of the weather.

The following two shots weren't taken in Victoria, rather in Pendrell Sound, another of BC's incredible cruising destinations. Bo Curtis of Waxwing sent them and I'm putting them up here to give a bit more feel for Bo and Cathy's handsome vessel than we could obtain dockside in Victoria. You start to see from some of these cruising pictures what it is about the Northwest that makes boating up here so intoxicating.

Oh man, all these pictures are just incredible!!!
Thanks to all who attended and shared. A hearty thanks to all the owner who put so much work into these awesome boats.
The converted fishing boats make me regret ever selling my boat. It also encourages me to buy another.
What a great part of the world you men and women live in!
Thanks again.

Thank-you for the photos and commentary. If my ship ever happens to come in, I'm going to trade it for a B.C. fishboat :)
On the other hand, can anyone tell me more about Sweet Pea? I saw that someone said it was a 19' Atkin design. Is it something like a Shore Liner, or..?
Thanks,
Penokee

Probably nothing like Shore liner. More like Joan, perhaps. You could try contacting the Cow Bay Maritime Centre. They might know more: http://www.classicboats.org/

I'd heard rumor that Hessel might put her up for sale at the show. If she's in the condition she smelled to be in, she'd be worth it to the right owner. Impossible to do again for the money. You'd have to like all the gingerbread, of course. I did.

Hello Lew,
I am back. Selling the Castle Rock is a depressing thought. On the other hand, if she doesn't sell we'll happily keep her. I saw the article you wrote in the Classic yacht Magazine. It was a great read with some great pictures. I think you are a gem of a guy for doing that. I also noticed the postings from all your friends wishing you a happy birthday. So, a belated happy birthday from us Lew.
I'll keep you posted on the Castle Rock.

I spent about an hour looking over the ad late last week - very nice boat Hess, you've done a marvelous boat proud.
BTW - you used to come by Dollarton just about every week in the summers and either nose in or cruise by and honk. We never could figure out who you were honking at, but we sure enjoyed the flybys!. Haven't seen you in a ling while though.
