Well, I finally got to visit with Airlie today. Russel Stover and I went aboard this afternoon. Russel ate all the dogfood that Jamie spilled. :)
The boat and owner looked great, she was at a mooring already with her masts stepped. Just a few more details to finish. Maiden voyage probably early in the week. Hopefully Jamie can go sailing with us tomorrow in Talisman. :) Anyone else want to come?

She can't sail without sails and running rigging and he's waiting until the yard guys are done with the carpentry, electrical and propane work. He's still looking for help with the rigging. Hopefully Hughman is coming down, anyone else? Has his phone been turned back on yet? He's only about 5 miles away from here but I have to drive up to contact him. With luck the sails and rigging will happen Friday and Saturday and first sail on Sunday.

Yes, I did get a tour! The workmen were busy installing dish racks and shelves and hooking up the propane connections/solenoid/tubing down below so I only got a brief look-see there. Jamie's got a fabulous saluting cannon which is news to me, maybe not others. She'd serve well as Ringle !

C-Dog has been shorn and is the Belle of the Boatyard. Very popular with a short salivating spaniel. She's got a comfortable cabin top spot from which she can supervise effectively.

Here are a few pics of Airlie in her current state of dress/undress. Jamie says the steering position takes some getting used to, perching as he must on the aft cockpit coaming among the running backstay purchases. I'm wondering if a tiller might be a better solution so he can rig a piston model/gps rig for self steering. (Yes, yes... 'weather' helm and all that crap. BS I say.) Down the line maybe. I'd want a good feel for that sweet slippery hull. Worm gear interferes, but does give monster leverage.

Steve,

I take my daughter and s-i-l back to PWM on Sat. the 15th for a 4 pm flight to the Pac NW. I plan to have the Meerkat Memorial plaque finished for her to take, but my plans are notoriously optimistic. If the flight were earlier I could sail with you then, but that late is kind of a bother unless you feature a late afternoon poke-around on Talisman.
Something to consider, anyway.

Any thoughts yet about how late you'll keep her in the water? I'm hoping to sail into late October now that I can reef and have a 'short' jib.

Is he still planning on leaving tomorrow? Seems a little hasty to me.
I wish he would reactivate his phone. Mark wanted to know if the gas line was run but didn't want to drive out there and then not be able to hook up the stove 'cause the boatyard hadn't done their part. Oh well. He wants people to come with him on the sail trials but we don't know if he's going out or when. He hasn't even checked to see if his wifi connection works. Rant over.

No, he's not leaving tomorrow. He's talking about trial sails this weekend. I recommended he get around to checking in the with Ian who wanted to help him with the rigging and test sails.

Also he's waiting for Tylerdurden to come and help with the propane. I'm not clear about just how he's intending to wait, or what's been done to prepare for that, but that was my impression from our conversation.

Seems Jamie's just not in a hurry, sort of generically, as a lifestyle. We just have to accept that. He even appreciated my way far left bumperstickers! Kill Your Television. The President is Lying. Fearful People Do Stupid Things. etc. etc.

Hey, those phone pics came out OK. :)

I'm working on getting some more pics ready. Mark, Bill R, Jamie and I went out for a short sail on Airlie this evening. Wow, she sure hasn't forgotten how to sail. :D We had light winds, 5 - 8 knots and she handled great. You could leave the wheel on a course and walk up to the bow and back and the wheel wouldn't move at all. She holds her course straight and true. There are a few things that need attention, blocks that need to be turned the other way and halyards untangled but she's looking good and sailing good. Thanks for having us aboard Jamie. More pics to come.

Five to eight knots? Airlie is slippery enough to move pretty well in those over-wrought sighs, but she'll really show her pedigree when its blowing twenty-five to thirty and the seas are building. I'll be waiting for the inevitable gushing of praise for her afterwards, and will regret that I will not have seen the look on the crew's faces as she effortlessly romps her way past the plastic-fantastics as they pound their way homewards.

Congrats, Jamie; I hope she eats up the local boats like she did up here.

I noticed this in the other photo and hoped some one else would ask but....... why does it appear theres a big bolt / pin with cotter key missing? Is that common? It "looks" like theres never been a washer or bolt in that starboard hole , BUT why is there a hole there if none is needed?

Lookin good Jamie! Have good sail to Conn.

davidagage
09-20-2007, 10:08 AM
I know the answer, I think...
The piece the rod goes into underneath the screw gear is the rudder shaft. If a pin was in both ends the shaft couldn't rotate. The pin is the connection from the worm to the rudder shaft. Here is one of Jamie's older pictures that might help. (I hope he doesn't mind me posting them..)

Thanks David

I'd more than likely understand it better if I could see it in operation. I thought that screw shaft just was held down by the yoke and is turning a cog or gear that would be attached to the top of the shaft thats headed downward toward the rudder:confused:

It sure looks like there never been a bolt or pin in that hole so maybe the yoke is made < some what genericly (sp)> so the pin can be installed on one side or the other if access to one side is obstructed by something!

So hows Black Spirit work coming ?

StevenBauer
09-20-2007, 04:22 PM
David's got it. If you move the pin to the other side the wheel would work the other way. We've got a thread going about this right now. :)

How far South are they going? If they need help around the NYC area I have a mooring in Sheepshead Bay just inside Cony Island off Jamacia Bay. I am pretty sure my marina has a spare that could be used for a transient, they would not have to go up inside the NY harbor.

Airlie is on a mooring in Onset harbor. She went through the canal around 10:45 this morning.

Ian is home for a couple days shore leave. Jamie is moving Airlie to Parker's boatyard for a day's layover tomorrow morning.

The whiskey bottle is down about to half. The cell phone does work but Jamie only listens to his messages a couple times a day.

Seems they're headed for Pt. Judith Wednesday, then on to Essex, Thursday. There seems to be talk of a bar-b-que at Lefty's in there somewhere, but I haven't a clue of precisely where!

Today's update:

Jamie motored across the canal channel to Red Brook Harbor, in Cataumet, a village of the town of Bourne on Cape Cod. The mooring fee was identical to Onset so there was no gripe there, and he was in much classier company, since Raz Parker's boatyard is a haven of beautiful wooden things.

Around 1:30-ish I checked in on him and discovered that he needed a trip to resupply. We went to the grocery store. He bought stuff while I got to walk Ceilidgh (apparently most proferred spelling) around North Falmouth and West Falmouth. Then I took them for a brief drive around my shoreline ending at Megansett where Kathleen could be observed on her mooring.

Then back to the boat, since Bruce Parker was leaving at 5 and that was the last launch.

Life continues apace.

Update on Jamie's former tender/rowboat Hawkeye:

My father-in-law told a story tonight about a girl he met here when he was courting my mother-in-law, his soon-to-be-bride, sixty five years ago. He said the other girl was about as tenacious and hard to shake as a barnacle. Her name was... wait for it...

Hawkeye has been renamed. Just too good to waste. I wonder if she's still around somewhere. Guess we'll find out.

Well, they made it to Padanaram last night. They had to motor sail the whole way because the wind was so high and they felt they had to head straight into it.

Don't ask me...

Anyway, oil pressure sank to zero near Cuttyhunk/Penikese so they hove to and Jamie spent 20 minutes trying to locate the single can of oil he had somewhere.

Grateful refuge in Padanaram. Plenty of services there, for sure.

Wind very high today as well, visibility not real great, maybe I'll check in with Ian this evening, see if they made it to Pt. Judith.

Word at 7AM (Thanks Ian...) was that Bacon boy and Ian were about to leave Point Judith headed for Essex, Ct. Hoping to catch the tide change at "The Race".

Ian's timing is perfect to catch the peak of the flood. If they can get her to point above the rock in that southerly they should be reading 11s and 12s SOG.

They'll hit the river at lunchtime, I'd think. Bucking up to essex with a questionable engine... ETA at the Seal could be anyone's guess.

Which side? Spicer's or the Shipyard?

impromptu EBS at the Seahorse?

Better check with Ian. Might not be there by then.

Ian's back on the Cape....Actually I gather that he'll be in Mystic on Saturday w/Mary Ellen.....
Or were you suggesting that Jaime might not be in Essex by then? Considering the breakneck pace that he' set so far...... You could be correct! ;) :D

When we left Onsett Tuesday we motor sailed on fore alone and made nice time. There was a large Crocker ketch under power alone making very heavy weather of it. We romped on past and were down tacking towards Cuttyhunk when the engin lost oil pressure.

This is the penalty for only saying, "Gotta check the oil tomorrow morning."

Anyway, shut her right down.

While Jamie searched for the one quart he thought was somewhere I hove-to fore alone - very nice but a bit wet - and contemplated alternative harbors. Jamie found the quart, popped it in which left her in the zone but still a quart low, and we tried the motor. 40 psi.

Thing is, with no reserve and no idea if she was just burning a little - my theory - or something worse, we chose Padanaram as the place we could sail into, make a mooring, and find oil ashore.

Wednesday we motorsailed upwind to the Point Judeth Harbor of Refuge. The wind was a bit lighter so got the jib up as well. Motorsailing into the wind the the main is rarely helpful as the jib and fore can set more tightly and still give some power. But yesterday we started with full sail at last, and got a nice lift with enough wind that we even managed a couple hours tight reach with the rock crusher off. She does move. Like off the wind from Cuttyhunk to Padanarum we did 7+ under fore alone. Yesterday in Gentle to Moderate Breeze - Force 3 - 4 - we were nipping along at GPS 7 while the current was with us, 5 when it turned against further in Fisher's Island Sound.

Lovely boat. Cailidgh is going to miss my sleeping bag.

So where is the boat? BTW if the pressure gets so bad that the oil pressure light comes on, I generally think of it as bad news. However on some boats the light comes on at 20 pounds which is O.K. for idling. What rev's were you getting the 40 pounds at.

I'd get someone who knows motors to look at it.

If there's no one available locally I can jump down there.

The motor needs a comprehensive look and I'm no monkey wrench sailor so I's not the bye.

I was watching the guage - 40 to nearly nothing as I watched. Shut right down. A tiney bit on the stick - in the end needed two quarts to be back to full. But it seems to be from burning a little at a time, not catastrophic sudden loss. There was no itemization on what the mechanic who "went over all of it" actually did but my take is a valve adjustment and compression check are the minimum in order.

And checking the oil every morning. Not a new mill.

Jamie's car is still here in front of my house. Any idea what his plans are? He'll probably miss it eventually. :) Needs a clutch, too. :(

He's on the train line down there in CT, just a matter of crossing Boston

Don't rush the boy. Probably tomorrow a by-day in Mystic. Get to Essex over the weekend. Maybe retreive the car next week sometime.

Just got a call from Bacon boy. He made Hamburg Cove yesterday afternoon. He had a reading of 8.5Kts close hauled into a west southwest breeze of about 20-25Kts. Not bad.... He's out of cell phone minutes, so he'll be incomunicado (like that's news) until he gets a new card tomorrow...

Jamie does NOT LIKE technology. I heard about it about 300 times the morning I took him to get his groceries :-)

Now I'm not much to talk, being as I simply don't own a cell phone, but still. I think if I were on the water I might succumb.
