View Full Version : For the Aussies- Where to buy brass lettering and numbering (for Rego and boat name)

I have had no problems finding places that sell the numbering- ie for letterboxes etc- but have not yet come across somewhere to get full lettering (other than the standard A B C etc, with the letterbox numbers).
So, anyone know where to get these at a reasonably mild PITA price?
I've seen the numbers cheap as chips at the local $2 shops- but obviously want the letters to be in the same size/style.
Thanks,
Hans.

can't help, but I thought I'd let you know that should you be looking for numbers, you can't buy a nine.

Hans,
'round here, this place is pretty good at supplying that sort of thing:
J James Pty Ltd
Architectural Hardware
259 Military Rd Cremorne. NSW 2090, Australia.
Phone 612 9904 1599
or closer to home for you here (http://a-grade.com.au/brass.html)
Not sure if you can get A-Z, but might be worth a try.
Otherwise you can try one of those laser-cutting places and get them to cut the letters you want.
I got our house numbers cut that way and it was remarkably inexpensive. And you can use just about any font you choose.

Cheers Chris,
yeah, when googling I kept coming across design type places doing the laser cutting, but just sort of assumed it was going to cost too much.
I will give one of them a call.
Picking any font I want:eek:
well I was hoping to avoid that and just pick out of a couple available-
wait till my partner hears about that... now its gonna be weeks and weeks of looking at fonts, talking about fonts, disagreeing about fonts....:D

No worries. Pricing should be OK, depending on how long your boat name is. The longer the name the lower the average cost of the laser cut letters. As the brass letters I have seen around are around $20+ for a 75 mm letter, a long name should be a bit cheaper if laser cut.
You just have to get the right thickness brass sheet for what you want. I have been able to get 3, 4 or 5 mm brass strip (100mm wide). That should be OK, as the house numbers/letters are probably thicker than needed anyway.
Choosing a font is not too hard, but talk to the laser cutter first and make sure that you can provide the right file format for them. Another upside is that you are not limited by stock sizes - you want 68.5 mm high? You can get them.

Reasonably short name-
my boat is called Altair and then a standard two letter three number rego.
Unfortunately when I bought it I wasn't allowed to keep the early single digit Sandringham sail/rego number (SM7) as it was 'owned by the club' and 'as I wasn't a member it wasn't mine'. As I was restoring the boat just after buying it and found this out it was already too late as someone in their big weekend racer had already bought the number from the club.
So the rego is changed, but I will be stuffed if I will change the numbers on my sails (I don't race anyway).
It will be interesting the day we sail past the big plastic boat sporting our sail number (in a race)- I do hope we cause at least a little confusion... :D
