Has anyone ever seen this boat called the seapearl. It is fiberglass, but i really like it. Anyway, I am looking for plans on a boat of similar style and dimentions. It does NOT need to have the cat ketch rig as the sea pearl has. Just a similar hull shape, and an open cockpit, which I could potentially camp out in with a canvas cover over the boom or a canvas top like the boat in the picture has. I have seen a design for a 17 cat ketch, but it is too small. I am looking for around 20-22 feet, built in plywood. Any advice is appreciated.

If you like the Sea Pearl, you might be interested in the Big Jenny expedition boats:

http://www.bigjennyexpeditionboats.com/

There are three sizes: 18', 21', and 24'.

The hull shapes of the Sea Pearl and Big Jenny boats have a common ancestor ... a design called Carpenter by L. Francis Herreshoff. The Big Jenny's are more difficult to build than a Core Sound 20 -- they're designed for lapstrake ply -- but they're great boats. The designer did an article in WB ... check the online index.

I would second the CoreSound 20.

Graham will also draw up a different rig for you if you prefere, he tentaviely drew up a gaff rigged cutter for it at one time.

Though the Cat Ketch rig has so many positive attributes, I personally would not want to swap it out.

Having sailed both the Sea Pearl and CS 20, I'd put the CS well ahead in all respects.

Look at the sharpie in Chapelle's book "Boat Building"> The plans were available from the Smithsonian. I could be built of plywood. Also Rauel Parker's 19 ft Ohio Sharpie, designed for plywood construction.

John's Sharpie from Chesapeake Light Craft is similar but only 18' in length. It is available as plans or a kit.

Nice photo Thorne.
Also each person has a sail to play with. Perfect.

The Sea Pearl 21 is a fiberglass adaptation of L. Francis Herreshoff's "Carpenter" design, a tender to the motorsailer "Walrus".

So why don't you get the plans for the Carpenter from Mystic Seaport and build the original. It could be built strip planked, glued lap, or traditionally as designed.

It's shown in the book _Sensible Cruising Designs_ by LFH, and is cataloged in the L Francis Herreshoff collection at Mystic as:

38.170 CARPENTER; 18 ft. tender to WALRUS (38.81) Designer, L. Francis Herreshoff; Design #41

(There's probably enough information shown in _Sensible Cruising Designs_ to build the boat)

CLC no longer sells the kit for John's Sharpie ... only the plans. When I lived in Maryland I stopped by CLC occasionally, and once had a look at one they had under a tarp out back. One of their employees told me it was a handful to sail in anything more than light winds, or something like that. (You'll note that John's Sharpie is a good bit more narrow for her length than the Core Sound boats. She has a beam of 4'6", verus 5'10" for the CS 17 and 6'3" for the CS 20.)
