SO I go to a local wood boat show. I get there late. They have pulled most of the boats.
There is a thistle fleet where they held the show. I look over at the thisles, they are on trailers near the parking lot. I see a wood boat next to them. It's my buddies lightning built in late sixty something. I never thought his boat was all that great, but sitting next to a bunch of NOT wooden thistles, it looked absolutly beautiful. He has the only lightning up here, I know of. I was embarrassed for the thisle fleet.
I know the guy who was running the show. He is a bit mad at me for not getting my thistle in the show and for showing up late. I won't quote him but my reply was. "I'm glad I didn't get here 'til now, because that is embarassing, and there is no way I'm parking my thistle next to those things." He made me mad, and perhaps I was a bit too quick with my reply. I did refrain myself from saying "fozen snot"

Sorry folks it's not about sailing for me, it's all about the boat. I couldn't help the way I was feeling. The wood lightning looked so real sitting there. So I am going to garage my thistle for a long time. Save it for my kids. It's thier investment now.

I want a wood boat that has not been "frozen snotitized" Maybe a nice lapstrake? Any good suggestions would be very welcome. Maybe a set of plans? I don't know yet, but I do know I'm not "into" my thistle any more.

Thanks

Derek

Joel White designed a 22' lapstrake daysailer that is in one of the 30,40, 50 wooden boat books. It has a fixed keel though. They claim it to be very fast, and it looks so. One I would certainly consider if you could put it on a mooring.

Thanks for listening to my rambling and helping me find a new direction.

Can I make the assumption that lapstrakes would be harder to copy in materials other than wood?

Fixed keel is fine. I won't be blood letting from my shins anymore. I'm just into plans now. Fast, fun, safe and a good day of sailing with the family.

My son can race the thistle and deal with the pain in the buttocks and shins.
