View Full Version : Rainbow 1898.Yet another Auckland classic for restoration

Rainbow has been out of Auckland for over 40 years. Her last owner here was Leo Bouzaid ( father of Chris and Tony, both international sailors)and after his death she was sold to Nelson in the South Island. The Dimmock family have had her ever since and she's been maintained but not raced. So she's been in a bit of a time capsule really. She's the last of the 4 big Logan Brothers racing yachts to get the restoration treatment. Ariki 1905 and Iorangi 1901 are in excellent sailing condition. Rawhiti 1905, has gone to a west Auckland yard for a complete restoration and now Rainbow has come back to Auckland for the same in a South Auckland yard . A month or so ago I alluded to the fact that this project was on the boil so to speak but its now confirmed that She's been bought by a syndicate of 2 members of an Americas Cup team, an Auckland Yachtsman and businessman, and the Dimmock family has retained a share.
I've just arrived home from looking her over and its a great thrill to see her here I can tell you.I used make a pilgrimage every few years ( over the last 20)when down south to have a look at her and now to see her and get the news that she will be restored to original flush deck and gaff rig ... Its just terrific.

For various reasons, this boat is one of the "glamour" A class fleet and she's regarded as the first of the Brittania model here. She's really well known for various exploits. One of them was being shipped to Sydney, Australia early in her career to beat the Australian crack yachts of the time. The order for Rawhiti was no doubt influenced by her success there.

I don't know guys, I'm ignorant I know, but she looks awfully skinny.
When Roue, designer of the Bluenose, was asked why she went so well, he replied, "(Because) I gave her the power to carry sail."
And when Olin Stephens designed the follow-on to Dorade (Stormy Weather), he gave her just a little more beam. Yet Dorade was over a foot wider than Rainbow (similar length).
Rainbow has a successful racing history, of course, but I notice in the photo that she's reefed, her side decks are awash, and the sea around her doesn't look very big.
John, in a blow, you can take her!

Horses for courses I guess :D These boats are essentially coastal racing and cruising boats although a few have made trans tasman crossings.Rawhiti for example.
She is skinny even for us, Near enough the same beam as Waione but 9 ft longer. It makes for a fast boat though Dave. wet and fast. Actually there's a new pic of her sister Iorangi around somewhere.. I'll try and get it for here. You'll see what I mean.

This is a recent pic of Iorangi ( probably the most similar of hulls/size to Rainbow)at speed in a 2 handed race. John is desperately trying to find out who took it so he can get a copy.....

Iorangi is 10 ft longer than us but she only goes 8ft faster ;) :D But we have whupped her in the light before now. :D

Progress is good and steady with the deck and most deck beams off..
This is the inner skin of the foredeck Laid out on the workshop floor in forensic fashion. All the evidence of the various deck fittings sitting there to be analysed....

three principal areas of hull damage through rot/dissimilar metals .Chainplate area, the clamp where the deckbeams dovetail in and where the deck fastenings are, and a patch by the bib/clamp/ end grain of inner skins. ( There had been some iron ringframes in way of the mast fitted circa 1947 or 50)

I am one of the four owners in the syndicate restoring Rainbow and John B. has alerady nicely summarised the yacht. This is my third Logan restoration and the largest, but confess to engaging talented and skilled tradesman to do the work rather than myself in the interests of long term preservation! We have a lines plan and sail plan taken from "Little Ships" a now rare book on New Zealand yachting, published in the mid 1940's. We hope to post these on the Rainbow website shortly . As you will see from recent pictures posted we have replaced the garboard outer plank, the inner skins were perfect, and carried out some repair work to the chainplate area. The plan is to undertake some refastening, install the deck beams, deak, fit the interior , and fit new spars. Only if it was all that simple.
Overall we are very happy with the condition of the hull bearing in mind she is now in her 108th year due to the the glories of kauri timber and triple skin construction. Our plan is to retore her to orginal condition including orginal rig, but we will put in a small desiel engine (40hp) and replace the traditional bucket with a more ecologically friendly head and holding tank. We do not have an interior plan or photographs, but are trying to track some down. Failing finding some we have some drawings of other Logan interiors of the period to work from. In short it will be clean, simple but tasteful . She was built to race so her accomodations were never too elaborate even with 4 1/2 ' headroom. We expect a lauch by 2007 followed by trials to work her up to speed before risking her against Waione (also to work up her owners to handling a gaff rig!). Thanks for all your interest and comments. Anyone is welcome to visit her in the shed at Papakura, Auckland open during normal work hours.
Best wishes and happy wooden boat sailing
Great job, great pictures!!

Nice to see you here Hamish.
'risk her against Waione' eh. Thats a laugh, you'll have her for breakfast.:) Just got back from a really fantastic weekend at a mahurangi club event at North cove as guests of Steve H and the Pardeys.
I may be onto something interesting re lines etc.I'll ask about interior plans when I follow it up.
I had a pile of 3mm mdf offcuts dropped off at the boat for patterning and Paul promises not to use any on the inner skins.:D
Hamishnz
04-17-2006, 05:18 AM
I envy your weekend. The Valencia coast doesn't cut it for cruising compared to the Hauraki Gulf.
I am really interested about your comment on lines and interior plans. I have a copy from John G. of the Iorangi plan which shows some interior layout. Unless we get anything more we will probabily settle on this. I will probabily try and get some curent interior pictures of Ariki and Rawene to add to the mix, although I undertsand Ariki's may not be too orginal.
Thanks for the mdf offcuts I am sure they will perform a useful function before being consigned to the fire.
I am having trouble adding images to this post, it seems the site finds my images too large and I cannot seem to reduce them in size, any suggestions?
John B

It'll take me a week or two to follow up ( maybe) . The guy I need to catch up with is away on his boat.
Re photos. You need some sort of photo editing software to compress them down , or , if you use imagestation as your online photo storage, the photos are already compressed in the view commonly used . IE they first show as a thumbnail, then the next click gives you a low kb file suitable to use here.

Update: when I last saw her not that long ago she was looking like this
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid202/p194ce544f63093b1d65015c869f0737d/efc0de66.jpg
and the same patch ( the port chainplates) now looks like this
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid205/p5c839619a7e9c6d701a255c466166c78/ef34458b.jpg
To recap, this chainplate area is damaged because an iron ringframe had been fitted in the 50's to strengthen her for a very tall bermudan rig. The iron and fastenings have done the damage. Ngatira is the same incidentally.
This is the starboard side undergoing repair now
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid205/pd82821b965e63025da6e904e33c12987/ef344588.jpg
Its very interesting that we have three restorations of Edwardian triple skin kauri yachts happening all at the same time. The two logans ( Rawhiti and Rainbow)are following one particular restoration philosophy and the Bailey Ngatira, a slightly different one.
On Rainbow we could use this chainplate area as an example of the method the two logans are using.
You can see the scarf ramps of the inner skins and the removed section of stringer. What Paul Tingey is doing on Rainbow, is cut out the bad timber and prepare the scarfs. He red leads the surfaces of the timber he doesn't want glued and glues only the scarfs . When the skins are done they are red leaded and the stringer is glued in ( only the scarfs). Then fastened mechanically whether it be copper rivets or bronze screws.
The method followed on Ngatira is to red lead and scarf joint with extra mechanical fastenings but without glue.

The area of big progress and very good news is the removal and cleaning up of the garboard area
The stem and sternpost rabbet is exposed and for all I can see both these critical areas plus the inner skins are in remarkable condition.

Thanks for the inspiration John,
Fantastic to see that Kauri in such good nick. I have got Sheryl home, I stated out with the plan to cut a bit of rot, fit a few dutchmen and perhaps seal the decks. But......... No cabintop or doghouse later I am still digging out that horrible soft stuff. So its good to see the above restoration in (successful)action

Thanks for the updated pictures John. We are delighted with the condition of the inner skin, makes you wonder why more yachts were not constructed this way in other parts of the world. The guys are doing some refastening at present before as we begin to plan the rig and the interior. We are still holding out for some contemporary interior photographs.
PS Unlike her younger sister Rawhiti, Rainbow, a 1898 build and launch, is a Victorian rather than Edwardian yacht.

Great stuff: congratulations Hamish, and thanks John. I remember there was a thread before about this early type of NZ construction, but can you remind me? Between the skins is just red lead? And the fastenings- screws?
John B
05-01-2006, 05:46 AM
A lapse Hamish.. I've always known her as 99( tiller post and all that, but hang on.. still Victorian anyway?).
Shamus , There's debate as to what was between the skins. I'm not sure there was anything actually.Certainly you can find unpainted areas in normally inaccessible parts of the boats. Under bunks, up in the counter and I suspect it was that way for the inner skins too?Not sure though.Usually when they're opened up anything that was there is well gone.
The basic method is three skins , 2 diagonal and one fore and aft ,fastened with a copper nail and rove to make a rivet. As you can see, inside the boats there are only a sheer clamp, 2 stringers normally, a floor shelf and floors. Then a near ring frame (4 knees nearly meeting)in way of the samson post and a ring frame or bulkhead around the partners. All the latter are bronze screw fastened. Thats about it for structure. No ribs .
The deck is the same ,2 or 3 skin but over deck beams of course.
Hamishnz
05-01-2006, 06:25 AM
I have seen between the skins on a 1934 Logan Little Jim a light silk like fabric and I have a picture in NZ of the fabric as the third skin was being put on. I recall seeing similar fragments of fabric on Rainbow. JohnB speak to Paul or Laurie next time you visit they will be able to confirm what they have seen on their Rainbow adventures to date.

Port garboard going in today

Paul took the time to show me the full 6mm pattern the garboard was taken off. On top of the 'plan' pattern for the strake, he established stations and scribed male and female patterns at each station to give the strake profile. A male pattern first on the outside of the existing plank, and a female pattern taken off that to give the inside profile of the strake. Although there's twist he was able to make the fit without steam. Being dry there is no size variation and the fit is downright pretty. Not only pretty but complete with what is effectively a key locked joint at the leading end . IE the whole garboard had to enter its fit from the stern.

Been a while since updated.
The project slowed a little while one of the BB's had to spend some time on another boat but is all steaming ahead again now. Both garboards are in now.
A few weeks ago some frames went in in way of the mast and a mast step was fitted.

They discovered that the toe rail had been fastened down into the endgrain of the diagonal skins rather than bringing it in an inch and fastening into the sheer clamp. Makes you want to take the man aside who did that and have a word in his ear. Bit difficult though , since it was done in 1898.

Quick trip to have a look at the sternpost. We had a discussion last time I was there and I pointed out that the last little ‘triangle’shaped plank was designed to be removed for access to the aft half of the rudder post for removal. I knew this because of a conversation with Eric Wing in the mid 80’s. Eric Wing and Chris McMullen were McMullen and Wing boatbuilders and responsible for some high profile projects through the 70’s , 80’s and perhaps early ‘90’s before they sold the yard. Fritha was one of them. Eric was very passionate about the old Bailey and Logan racing yachts and had the Mahaki, an 1894 Logan 2 1/2 rater.
So Paul did that and repaired some shonky plank ends at the same time .

Thanks again JTA
I wandered out for a quick look at progress over the last month( christmas) and she's looking very smart inside with paint, all of the beams apart from amidships, the engine is in and the hydraulic drive box. Some interior work started .... all while the decks are off ( makes accessible.)

Something interesting. she's just come off 18 months or so out of the water and a hot summer under cover.Just recently she's started to weep salt water. My theory I proposed is that now she's got her deck on she's warmer inside and thats shoving the water out outside?
Andrew Craig-Bennett

John,
Mirelle did this after 18 months inside!
I investigated and found that salt crystals left on various parts of the internals had acted hygroscopically and collected enough moisture from the air in the shed to actually start dripping!
I wiped over everywhere I could reach with fresh water, and "got religion" about Herreshoff's recommended routine of rinsing a boat through with fresh water when laying up.

Was just about to say the same Andrew. We’ve had an unusually dry summer, and I mean dry. Not a drop for months and then it pours, the humidity levels hit the 90s often. That salt soaked kauri just sucked it all in. John, don’t know what you do with your salt on Y1 but the old trick is half a teaspoon of rice in the salt shaker to soak up the moisture from the salt. Never really worked in my opinion.
Am heading up to Haruru Falls tomorrow to check progress on Ngatira and do a bit. I’m thinking with the bit of rain they’ve had up north lately Ngatira must be sweating heavily.

Great photos. And a nicely done project. Looks like they got that bib/counter just right. What a beautiful sheer on her! 8'-10" beam on a 50' boat - incredible. What does she draw?
Awesome thread!
I know I am a bit behind in this, but is that an oarlock for a sculling oar I see on the transom?
http://www.rainbow1898.co.nz/img/gallery/108.jpg
I'm assuming that the engine is not 'vintage' and that was her original iron jib?
John B

re the moisture.. yes that would explain that.. lots of rain recently.
I'd say about 7 ft Stephen.
Bott, I don't know what it is.. some gimmick thats been added in recent years. I'd say for mooring or strapping for the truck journey or.. who knows. Certainly not anything original.

Deck is completed and glassed, it looks like most of the caulking is finished on the planking , just to be tied off into stem/ sternpost/ bib etc.
Engineering for the hydraulic drive happening down below and cockpit and companionway work proceeding.

A quick visit today and she's progressing with some further fastening, a bit more wood apparent and the second bulwark/ toe rail under construction.
What is particularly interesting and relevant to earlier comments, plus the "why you shouldn't glass these type of boats thread" is the phenomenal amount of water still coming out of her even after 18 months. Granted, a lot of this is the salt saturation in her timber and the way that sucks up the humidity... still its significant.

But I did get away for an hour and a half to look at a boat so it was a worthwhile day afterall.:D

I daresay they might be looking for a bit more paint aft but there's several hundred kilos of gear including the gaff, running rigging ,blocks , anchor tackle etc etc and nearly all of that will have an effect well forward of the max beam.
Two things though.. that boat historically always trimmed aft.
The other is that a fine bow gaff rig boat needs to be trimmed aft because they dive with the press of the rig when broad reaching and running... so you sort of preload em aft a bit.
Gotta go, leaving on Riada in 20min for an overnight and the weather is spectacular! some more pics in a day or two.

A few more photos today. She hasn't taken on any salt water yet and the only time the bilge pump has run is when the float switch was lifted to check it. Thats quite a testament to the skill levels of the men who have worked on her , particularly Ken Hitchens, who did all the caulking and paying. The effort that went into her by the boatbuilders Laurie Smith and Paul Tingey in all sorts of structural as well as both small and major aesthetic aspects really is quite outstanding. They worked in a synergy that well covered the traditional boatbuilding and any modern engineering that went into her.
some of those areas would be the completely concealed electrics and mechanics and the rehab of the original 1899 main bulkhead which needed all its edging replaced. The beautiful toe rail capping profile which is a true lambs tongue shape that throws no shadow ( rather than a flat with two radius edges routed on).

No not really... its just more like a french curve rather than a radius. The curve starts gently at the apex and then progressively tightens.
I guess what I'm saying is that there's been a lot of art been put back into her that pays dividends in the final result, a lot of standing back and looking for the best option rather than just the best technical solution.

John,
The last picture in your post number 90,hard on the left side of the photo, I see what looks like a single turnbuckle carrying 2 shrouds off the top. Yet, there are only three shrouds(two lowers and one upper) judging from what I can see in the pictures, and three corresponding chain plates. Could you enlighten me further as to what I am seeing?
Thank you for the glorious photo diary of this very significant restortion.Truly inspirational!!

Rainbow has the normal lowers and cap shrouds but she has those additional shrouds running through 'ears' about halfway out the spreaders to somewhere between the caps and lowers.. just to support that top panel centre. I expect they'll have a jib hanging there sometimes.
Swinging spreaders too( if I didn't mention that before). All Ed Burnetts work.

What a wonderful, wonderful thread this has been. Damn Imagestation for closing and taking all the pics with it.
Truly have enjoyed watching Rainbow's progress and can't thank you enough for your time in posting pictures and descriptions of her progress for us.

I was very fortunate to have an invitation to sail aboard Rainbow tonight. Her first sail since her restoration and launch ,after a bit of a hiatus over the christmas break.
We had a few minor glitches which will require some attention but the overall feeling was one of deep satisfaction and a real thrill to be aboard this NZ benchmark yacht from 1898 .
As with Iorangi , she has a deceptive turn of speed . Some aboard felt she was clicking maybe 6.5 or 7 but from my experience aboard Waione for 25 years and sailing on other contemporaries I could tell from her hull wave that (at times)she was well in the 8's and perhaps 9 ,reaching just effortlessly in perhaps 15 knots of breeze.
All in all it was a great sail for a couple of hours .
I just have to say congratulations to the owners, boatbuilders and designers for the vision and effort that went into her restoration and recreation. Just fantastic to see.

If it isnt a trade secret - what paint system did they use? Above waterline and below waterline?
How much would the wood layers (3 layers?) move when placed back in the water?
I wonder because those topsides look shiny - there was fairing and sanding and fairing then the shiny white -everything finished and then put back in the water. After 18 months of drying-out, won't the paint crack? Or doesn't the wood in the 3 or 2 skinned kauri Logans move that much?
I wonder how long the paint system, with care, will last - 5-7 years?

The owners ,they were some particularly happy guys alright.:D
Paint system is no secret but I don't recall what it was. Its a single pot and its not Altex or International, thats about all I remember. She's showing some small movement but she isn't taking any visible water, never has since launch, and the paint looks fine to me. Typically you'd expect to have somewhat of a sacrificial job the first season to account for squeezing out a seam or two, they'll haul and repaint for next year I'd expect.
She needs some use and a good hard sail sometime . We have our three day regatta in mid feb so thats the target although her first race should be the anniversary regatta next monday.
NICE!
Thanks for the pix :-)
