I have obtained a complete set of 80 year old solid spars for a gunter rig but I have my heart set on lug rig.

The age of the spars is a minimum one. So should I modify them?
I have not been up into the beams of the shed yet but they look bright with a good varnish colour showing.

How should I prepare them before letting them see light of day, rain, snow & sunlight again?

Corra

Go for it. Better to reuse in a different way than to let them sit for another 80 years. Hopefully you can use all of the spars.

Or just send them to me.

Thanks Pete,
I think that my archeological interests made me panic. The spars are mast, yard & two booms with blocks, strops, goose necks & cleats installed. One boom is split, hence the second boom. I'm going up in the beams tomorrow to check the measurements, but, I will leave them in situ until the spring and work out the rig on paper. I'ts going to be a long winter.

Corra, one of your archaeolgical thoughts would be that the world and the bits are changing artefacts?

So often when we worked on digs, we would find tools that had been reworked or retouched. The time frame made the situation interesting. We never new the dates between the originals first use and later reworkings, apart from their positions (layers) in the deposits. Major guesswork. At least you know.

Warren.
