View Full Version : Bronze or Brass half oval?

I need to order a bunch of metal pieces now that we're hopefully within a couple of weeks of putting together our Weekend Skiff.
One thing I'm thinking seriously of doing is putting half oval rub strips on the bow and the edge of the skeg.
This is a 15 1/2 foot fiberglass sheathed plywood hull skiff that'll spend most of its life in the garage and see salt water seldom if ever. Just to be safe (building for posterity, dontcha know... ;) ) I've used bronze everything so far.
The archives testify to the frequent use of brass half-oval with brass screws -- on other small boats as well as canoes. People talk about bronze half oval, but nobody seems to have a current source for it.
Can anybody point to a known, current source for bronze half-oval? Otherwise, I'll use brass.
Does it make sense to do this on top of fiberglass?
I figure it'd save us some fraction of the repairs we'd eventually have to make from bumping into things or the more common bit of abuse beaching.
The downside is making a lot of holes in perfectly good fiberglass. Lots of bedding compound, I suppose. I've got a can of Dolphinite waiting for it.
Thank you, folks.

A cheap and ugly (but light, practical and simple) alternative is to just use 1/2" x 1/8" aluminum strapping. This is assuming that you still have flat surfaces to attach to.
I did this on the 2 skegs of my 10ft pram and it worked fine. (They're underwater and hidden from view anyway.)
Mike;
I've been searching the web for a long time, trying to find a source for bronze half-round or half-oval. No success. I have naval brass half oval on my cruiser's cockpit coamings, and have had no problems with it. Corroded, it looks just like bronze.
I also have bronze half-oval that I took off of the Garvey I'm working on, so I know it was once made, but I sure can't find a source on the web.

Here's two sources off the top of my head.
More if needed.
Sorry Brass only. NOT Bronze.
Misread the post.

Keep us posted on what you find. I will need some half oval in a couple months and would like it to be bronze.
Good Luck!

Try Alaska Copper and Brass Inc.
or Port Townsend Foundry in Washington State.
The best you will probably find is naval brass.
Good Luck
