Probably been posted before but a humorous short article written by the wife of a boatbuilder:

http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/00/DM1999/articles/Help/index.htm

1. When you take your wife out, do not expect her to learn boat words--especially if she shows any initial resistance. Example: you say, "grab that halyard, honey," and she say, "you mean this rope?" do not under any circumstances try to explain why one rope is called a halyard and another a sheet. Just say, "yes, that one," or "no, that one over there." Better yet, color code your ropes so you can say, "grab that red one," or "pull on that blue one."

The article contains eleven other points husbands may benefit from.

Great article Jim.

And such are the virtues of patience and proper respect. I'm sure that there are many things familiar to women that would seem like an intellectual trip to the moon for many men. An inclusive approach to each others lives build a great relationship: Sharing each others interests in other words. :)

Will I ever learn boat words? Not too likely; it is way too much fun to argue about them.

'nuff said.

Spouses often seem to have difficulty with the terms such 'skipper, captain, master, commander'...

Sexist,
I know plenty of women sailors who are better than me (not too difficult). When I teach adults, women are usually the faster learners and they take the time to learn the nomenclature (which in my syllabus is a really low priority)

Like 'shopping!'

And Hwyl, this was written by a woman. If she wants to have a dig at her own sex, she's perfectly entitled to. I would like to see more men have dig at men and their self importance... Sorry! This isn't the Bilge!! :D

Anyway like I said its about patience and respect, not to mention a lack of condescension. All good virtues.

I think it is a good article. It is not totally humourous. It has good advice.
