6 weeks ago I took a look.
3 weeks ago I took her for a sail
This week I slipped her and had her surveyed.
Today its a done deal :):)

The vessel a 30 square metre is called White Wings Later just called Wings. Built by Harry Bond 1938 in Lake Maquarie Australia.
Soon to reside in Sydney Harbour and undergo some restoration work before hitting the racing scene once again..
A fantastic day on Lake Maquaire 10 knts gusting 15 and my first ever sail on a 30 square... Had to be back at the yacht brokers by 3pm I had visions of sailing off into the sunset... The yacht broker had to motor out and fetch me..

The creases in the main was caused by the halyard jam cleat not working properly.

oh cool, much better than that other one you were looking at. Whats the deal with lake McQuarrie, is it a true lake, you have to transport to the sea, or is there a way out on the water?

quick trip down the coast! 8 or 9 knots easy in that baby.

There is a way via a small channel and draw bridge.
I intend to do a 2 stage sail to sydney weather permitting as per my previous thread Coastal equipment advice... (http://www.woodenboatvb.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=72162)

Congratulations. See - I didn't even spill the beans. I was hoping it would all come off OK. Now to bring her back. I'd be doing the Swansea channel with the tide.

I need to put few days worth of work into a few areas such as the running back stay plates. Hope to sail her down in the new year...

Accomodations? Or strictly utilitarian/racing innards?

She did have accommodation in the form of forward slat bed and slat seats in the main cabin, which are in poor condition missing a few slats and varnish.

I would like very simple furnishings.
I have found some pics on the American and Swedish Skerry sites and I have joined the Skerry Forum in the hopes of obtaining more layouts and ideas. It would be nice to have a forward bunk a nice wooden sole a seat each side with storage. A sink with a small table top to cover it and if its possible an enclosed toilet. The best spot I can see would be in the right hand rear section of the cabin but the companion way would need to be moved left to make more room.
I plan on replacing the cabin anyway but how good would an offset companion way look??
I need more ideas there isn't much space to work with..

Offset companionways and skinny , low freeboard boats that sail on their ear don't go together.

You are right John I'll just have to find another way possibly a semi inclosed they can always close the hatch and entrance I am just thinking of the female and entertainig element whcih I think is a must to end a good days sailing on the harbour..

Here is a few shots of slipped the anti foul was pretty good one side but she had a few encrustations on the other in streaks it would seem they antifouled her and dropped her in the drink too soon and some of it washed off.

New 30's and 22's are being built in Sweden now. I had the same questions about interior layouts and found these on one of the sk22 link sites.

These are plastic 22 and 30 squares, but the ideas are good for a small space. It's still like trying to design a great-room, kitchen, and master suite to fit inside a drain pipe.

Looks like some chunky piece of filler has fallen of at the bow. Can you get the surveyor to have another look?

The hole that you see in the photo is about a foot from the water line it is about the size of a ten cent piece the mobile phone camera does tend to distort the images a little. There is a stainless steel band that stopped further damage so some expoxy filler and gel coat should fix that nicely.
She is sheathed it was done in the mid 90s and the surveyer went over every square foot it is still holding on nicely the only area of delamination was a very small area around the rudder stock but for 15 years or so thats not bad at all. She is built of western red Cedar and the planks look great. No signs of wood rot at all just wear and stress she is well ventalated. Her main ribs are Spotted gum and are also in good nick the little ribs are mostly OK but there is the ocasional bad ones.

Just a question wht did they use such big rivits on these little guys wouldn't bronze or brass screws have been better??

There are 11 wooden floors attached to bronze keel bolts, the 3 rear ones are new and 2 possibly 3 of the older ones need replacing. That is the worst of it. She does have an excelent pair of stringers and sheer clamp and the whole deck was replaced a couple of years back. Her mast sits on the keel and the side stays attach to stainless load bearing beams designed to distribute the load from the sheer clamp to the stringers and keel.

The list is long.
A project that will keep me busy for sometime the biggist problem I forsee is the temptation to sail when I should be carring out repairs.

Repair her in priority... and one the priorities is to use her. This from someone who has been doing too much work and too little boating for the last five years. Absolutely stunning boat.

HI all,

I am new here and a regular at Sailing Anarchy. I have owned a 22 square called Skerry of Kerraba for 1 year and its alot of fun. We race out of Avalon Sailing Club once a month or just a cruise and muck around. I would love to get in contact with the other metre boat owners in this forum and the owners around Sydney. I see Chris has some background on Skerrry. Look forward to chatting soon.

Chaeck out the youtube footage. sailnig with my son reaching down pitwater.

Hi Matb
Send Chris a PM he will more than likely want your details. He is also aware of all the upcomming regattas involving meter yachts.
Is the any other meter yachts sailing up your way?

Salty it is lucky I'm not your sailing coach Skipper ... I'd give you heaps for how you have set that genoa in flat water, in the first and second photos. That is a power setting for punching through swell in a boat that size ... flatten that luff.

Congratulations again by the way, she is a lovely looking boat, and move the jib cars back to flatten the bottom half of the genoa as well, that will take the bulge out of that slot, too much turbulance is affecting your main ... are you still in small boat mode? ... Then good!!

I'm hoping to see you in Eden on the 16th and 17th of next month for the 34th running of the Twofold Bay Regatta ... in the other boat, in the off the beach cat. Be there or be square Salty.

Warren.

Yeah it wasn't the best setup it was our first test sail.
The main halyard we discovered went through the wrong lock at right angles to the winch so the main wasn't pulled all the way up as you can see by the boom angle.
The boat was neglected for the last few years with 2 of the four winches siezed.
The jib car tracks coated in crap from the birds nests and the cars could barely move. We had them both as far back as they would move and due to lack of time we gave up the fight and took her out.
I have since sorted all those problems and she does perform a lot better.
Still more to do but I have a 2 hour drive each way to pay her a visit so its all about getting her ship shape for the sail down the coast hopefully in 2 weeks time weather permitting.
Still I will be watching the meter boat sailors closely for there is always new things to learn.

As to my little Cat well I was planning my last hurah on her at a ragatta on lake Macquarie in 1 weeks time. She is a nice cat but I will more than likely have my hands full with wings and she opens up new possibilties.

So in regards to "Be there or be square" I will be Square..... 30 times over..:D:D:)

" ... for there is always new things to learn."

Absolutely. Good luck with next week's regatta. I'm sorry you will miss the Eden regatta. It looks like Woden Boat Forum Members will not be winning two divisions now.

I think Lake Macquarie is an awesome place to sail. I like the area from Wangi Wangi Point past Pulbar Island down towards the Shingle Splitter's Mark and across to the Gwandolin Bowling Club for lunch, then sailing back to Rathmines. Lake Macquarie has it all.

Mat's footage of sailing in Pittwater looked like it was worth the trouble.
