Anyone have a suggestion for paint scheme for this boat? Life boat (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4535343053&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1)

Should I keep the Black? The original paint is actually in good shape. But I"m curious what other folks would do. Be Creative

Thanks, Barry

Nice buy, barry. Ya done good! I'd keep her black and varnish the 2 rails, but add a buff colour between them. The buff would accentuate the sheer and draw out the lines nicely. Very traditional old British kind of thing. Varnished spars of course, maybe with black tips.

Barring that, go with flames like a hot rod :D

Great project boat. - Norm

Black is awfully hard on a wooden boat in warm climates - too much heat absorbsion. If you keep her in Gabriola, fine, but if you take her to California, I'd change her to pale grey, white trim, and white spar tips. Buff interior with white seats. Red or green accents, but sparingly.

(Edit: Darned inflexible fingers! )

A friend of mine in Sidney,BC is fixing up his life boat as well. His was also owned by William Garden (I hear he owned quite a few at one point or another).
Anyways - Garden comes around his shop a fair bit and the two of them are planning on adding another strake to her height.
Some huge rig going into her too - but I can't remember what it was....
Not sure what color he's gong with either.

Traditional British style lifeboat?

Dump the black. Very bad colour for wooden hulls, and you cannot expect a black clinker hull to stay tight.

Repaint in white, black gunwales and rubbing band, dark blue between them, add two red lines along the gunwale and the rubbing band.

Add a dark blue boot top, and red antifouling.

I was thinking a nice plaid would be nice... Or paisley! I think a paisley boat would look fantastic! Up-keep would be a chore though... :D

Hi Barry good to see you back, thanks for the e-mail the other day.If you wanted to get her in the water with a minimum of fuss this year maybe keep her black. The lifeboats onboard the St Roch are a bluegrey colour,I don't know if that's traditional.A lighter colour or bright sheer would look nice.

I like it the way it is, it just "fits". I can't see that the black will matter all that much if you keep it up here in the Northwest but I am a stitch and glue guy and really do not have the experience with traditional boats.
Those of you that say black is a bad idea is that just a general statement or is it a bad idea reguardless of the climate?

It's pretty much a bad idea regardless of the climate, because even in the deep North there is ample sunlight in summer (24 hours of it, if you go far enough!) and it is the way that the black colour picks up the infrared radiation from the Sun that does the damage.
