I recently bought a boat on Ebay that was close enough for me to get, but I also bought a 21' scull in FL that was too far ..and then, I lusted after a wherry near Seattle...

If you have something unusual; there's U-ship where you can post a request to find a shipper ...there's ride-share people on Craigslist that would car top a small boat pretty cheap, but the best I have found is Affordable Boat Carriers in Melbourne FL.

They're up/dn the Eastcoast year'round hauling most racing sculls and small boats, so don't call for your Grand Banks 44. They're bringing the scull up for me for $300. The boat in Seattle would have been about $500. So, I wouldn't hesitate to bid on something that's not near home - call them first and get an idea.

Greg: http://www.shopperguide.net/advertisers/affordableboatcarriers/index.htm is the only page I've seen for them. I spoke to the wife/traffic mgr. ...and perhaps the best way to contact them is via email: "Tami Baker" <info@affordableboatcarriers.net>

I gather almost the whole rowing community has used them for years. When I spoke to them about bringing a boat from WA to MD, they said the process was Westcoast-FL ...then FL-(MD) during a New England run. They even travel in Winter?! They're nuts...

Another way to move rowing shells is to check out the Transportation Wanted or Offered section of the Row2k.com Classifieds. http://www.row2k.com/classifieds/classifieds.pl

Colleges, school crews and builders often coordinate moving boats from one part of the country to another for regattas or sales and advertise there for who may need boat transport at shared costs.

It may not work as well for moving small boats with greater beam and depth, but sometimes there may be room in the back of a pickup or on its load. They won't travel far for pickup however, and you will need to wait on their schedule and drop off points.

I once started arranging to have a mast shipped that way from Texas to Boston but found a spar locally instead.
