I am having a problem epoxying/fiberglassing the inside of a cedar strip canoe. I was told after the precoat to wet out the fabric with one coat of epoxy, this would allow the fabric to provide grip for the user. O.K. fine, but in some spots the epoxy dried a little thicker and a lot more glossy than the rest. To get rid of the glossy areas
should I, Put on another coat of epoxy to make the whole boat a little more glossy.
Or put on a layer of varnish. Will this blend in the glossy areas or just make them stand out more?
Neither of the sources I used say any thing about putting varnish on the inside, wouldnt the inside need to be protected from uv light also?
Thanks for your help.

If the epoxy has cured it must be sanded to provided a good mechanical bond for the next coat. Coating the wood with epoxy before glassing is fine but not nessasary. I recommend you fill in the weave of the fiberglass with as many coats of epoxy as it takes, then sand, then varnish. Wood strip boats are pretty, and one than doesn't show glass work is prettier.

I would only use 1 additional coat of epoxy to attempt to even up the gloss but preserve the non-skid properties of the unfilled weave. To sand or nor to sand (that is the question) depends on the blushing properties of the epoxy.
Varnish is still necessary for UIV protection.

Every extra filler coat on the inside adds 2-3 lbs. of unneeded weight and at a certain point starts to make the inside slick. I might give it one more coat, trying to even it up (probably with a stiff foam squeegee- ethafoam or mini-cell) and then varnish, or just varnish it now with a satin varnish.
