Does the Cayanne pepper, ground fine, and mixed into the paint stop them? It sure keeps the algea from growning.

The cayenne pepper trick worked fine for me for more than 30 years....but others say BS.....so your mileage may vary...but then...my hull was covered with xynole epoxy....

So, the cayenne pepper just seemed to keep the stuff from growing on your hull, right.

Also, I take it from this and other posts that yours was a cold molded boat, not traditionally planked?

Strip planked, cold molded over, xynole fabric......prior boat similar except dynel fabric....boat before that was sheet ply with glass polyester and before that was sheet ply and paint......

Thanks guys, I got a reply from Donald Street saying they have been using Island tropical-44, but it is illegal in the states so you only get it down there. Another question I have is the perannual topic, what is the best treatment for a teak deck? What has worked for you?

Well, the shrimpers around me in the Carolinas swear by cayenne, and those guys wouldn't waste a red cent...our observations from last year's cruising is 'just don't stop!'...after several thousand miles last summer, when we arrived back in Beaufort, the bottom paint looked like we had just launched; clean as a whistle. That said, we didn't stop moving for over three days in five months...seems they can't eat ya if they can't catch ya!..Teak decks??..I have neglected the teak on my Herreshoff in Sausalito for three years. Last month I shook my head at how the deck looked, and used my preferred treatment; salt water, vinegar, a stiff brush, and elbow grease....they turned out immaculate!..brought the reddish hue right back....just my thoughts on both topics, with just personal experience, no rocket science.
