As some of you know we got a 24' Al Mason designed Ostkust sloop last spring. What with getting the engine sorted out and dealing with the Harbor Master about getting a mooring we didn't launch until mid July. But even with our shortened season we were fortunate to take quite a few WBForumites out sailing. Mary and I had several nice sails just the two of us, and we had lots of adventures with the kids, but we really enjoyed taking out some of our 'imaginary' friends, too. Besides family members and 'real' friends we had fun sailing with Gareth, Mark, Bill, Clint, Ed, Ken and Eric(and almost Jimmy:)).

I've sailed with Joe on Tidbit, Chris on Victoria and Russ on Sjogin and I'm hoping to sail with Ken on TallyHo and of course with Margo on Sarah. (and Ed on Phoenix, though probably not this year;)).

Here's the "Challenge". Let's see who can take the most fellow Forumites sailing this year.

I know Joe has taken out a few. And Russ and Jim. Can't forget Jamie and Ian. Or Mike and Lew. How about it? Photos would be fun, too. :D

Here are a few Talisman shots:

He has the shots and will post when he gets home.
Great pix, what's with the remote one of your girls is holding, have you automated the rig perhaps?

Those are nice!

We don't sail, more like motor, but it's a worthy challange Steven! We'll take it up.

If I can remember. Last year we had Roger and Annie Morris, Meerkat for the last time, Rick and Melinda, the Thompsons, the Smalsers, uh, jimmy....(katiedobie) and then I'm drawing a blank after that. Margo got close but didn't get to Seattle, and Bob (oh that Bob) and Paul have never sailed on Rita, which is my fault as much as theirs, or maybe that's vice versa, but both have visited. We've had too many Canadian forum guests aboard to name but none out for a ride, and we really need to remedy that this year.

I'd like to have Nicholas out, Paul Pless if he gets out here with Katherine, rbgarr, yeah, that would be good! Anybody that gets here really.

Nobody showed yesterday, but there was a short window before the rain started at noon. Now, next weekend looks likely! SEA HARMONY is almost always in commission and we always enjoy a good excuse to sail.

Ian McColgin
01-02-2008, 06:47 AM
Yeah. I've got the engin decommissioned so it's sail only. Yesterday's window was too brief to get under weigh and the southeast wind was from exactly the direction hardest to move the boat to a place where we could get the sail up and pull away.

So maybe the thaw this weekend.

Joe, it's got to be a fresh start.

No counting last years passengers.:p

Ah, Now you have done it Jim. A separate challenge for Joe. I can see it now. Joe gets up and leaves the mac running, Lucky slumbering, and a warm apartment. He hops in the car, starts it up and drives to the river where he pulls out a chainsaw and cuts a hole in the ice. He then, gets back in the car, drives to Tidbit, drags her to the hole he had cut ( before it refreezes ) and dumps her in the water.
Finally, he tracks down Phil, who is, more than likely, hiding in some bar where the atmosphere is warm and the beer is cold. Joe hogties him, throws him in the car and as quickly as possible, (in part due to the his not wanting to listen to Phil cursing at the top of his lungs in the back seat), drives back to Tidbit. At which time, he throws Phil aboard.
And while Phil is freezing to death in the cockpit,Joe snaps a few pictures and posts them...
The first guest in 2008!

Now how does it go?

Nice photo's and a really nice boat.

I was noticing how you have your main cleated off and would suggest that you just try wrapping it around the cleat and not using the figure eight that you are using. It's always good to be able to dump the sail in case of an emergency. Granted it's not that windy. I was corrected a few times by Gordon Murray, a friend of mine, mentor and a former steward to the Corronet. It made sense to me. The knot your using is best used to tie the boat to the dock. By just wrapping it, the friction of the line should hold it.

Rob

Joe ( Cold Spring on Hudson )
01-04-2008, 07:09 AM
Rob thanks for the main sheet advice, can't say as though I havent heard it before though. ;)lots of people gasp when they see me cleat off like that. But I have a bunch I ways I attend to that main sheet line in different conditions. When the wind is light a fluttering simply wrapping the line around the cleat does not work. The shape of the cleat and the dia of the three strand and the boom all conspire to work the line loose. When its blowing the line is wrapped once around and held never cleated. When on a run with the boom way out its cleated with one loosly around and held at the end with a fast release stopper knot. But in favoriable conditions that hitch is just about perfect and I'm quite skilled at quickly undoing it should it freshen up. Again thanks and I understand your concern.

Steven is one of the smilingist people I have met.
I really enjoyed our bay float dinner on your sailboat. Watching you row your wife and my wife back to the boat and back to shore in such a tiny, tiny, dinghy (and with such a strong current) was...interesting. Have you built that new tender yet?

Next time I am up in Portland, Maine we are definitely going sailing, Ok with you Steven?

I got to go aboard Arlie while I was up there. Lovely work. She looked fine and fast. You should be exttremely proud of her. And I am sure that pride will only grow as you begin to win some races. I wish I could get up there to help you crew a feww races.

Being on Rita was a dream. I still remember a lot of that ride. Very little else of that whole trip stick out, but being on Lake Union wit Lew aboard Rita was fun.

I am going to go back to visit Portland, OR this July. Any offers from forumites that live in the Portland to Seattle area would be kindly appreciated. Hopefully I can help some people make a good showing at this contest.

Now is the best time to sail on my lake. Sunny, warm (in the 70s to 80s) with 10 to 12 MPH wind gusting to 16. Steady easterly direction. No humidity. I am about one month away from completing the two rental rooms on the lake, so for foumites I am willing to let them stay for free, (for a reasonable time of course) just come on down to Mexico and I will take you sailing on waters you will not believe.

Hi Steven,
Is this Dancing Feather? If so I was also quite taken with this boat and crawled all around on her while she was at Atlantic Challenge. Of course I never got behond the fantacy stage. I'm so glad she found a home. I'm curious about how much you had to do to her to splash and what you did with that interesting Vire. I loved everything about this boat. What a beauty. How does she sail?

StevenBauer
02-01-2008, 08:45 PM
Hi Tony, this is Dancing Feather. We found out her former name was Talisman so we changed it back. There are lots of threads here on the Forum about getting her ready and our first season sailing. Just search Ostkust or Talisman.
The Vire was completely clogged, no water flow at all. Luckily she is light, two of us could get her out of the boat. I had some help from a forumite getting things flowing then she ran great all season. She's got a lot of power for the Ostkust. At full throttle she goes abot 6 knots, at half about 5.5 at an idle about 5. ;)

Splashing was covered in one of the older threads, too. Basically I sanded the bottom with 80 grit and gave it a coat of bottom paint. Topsides and deck got a coat of paint, too. And the mast. The boom was stipped down to bare wood and varnished. Some new wiring, too. She is a fine sailer, though the sails are about 20 years old and new ones would be nice.

This spring I'm going to refinish the cockpit and coamings and toe rail. The off season after that maybe freshen up the cabin.

Since you've read this thread you know that you're invited to come out for a sail this summer. :D Or you could stop by with your sandpaper and varnish brushes in the spring. :)

I've been a bit shy about this project here because the number of pounds of wood in the boat is less than the amounts of epoxy or glass
and barely ahead of carbon and Core-Cell foam.
Margo is correct to mention lightness. At 28' x 23' x 43', it'll weigh about 1700 lbs.
Here's a photo of the day 22 of us moved the main hull outdoors. Can you count the Forumites and an oft-named associate?

http://conlin-boats.com/img_0990a.jpg

There's more about the design in Boat Design Quarterly #2. Googling Newick Spark or White Wings might illuminate, too.

rbgarr
02-02-2008, 03:17 PM
Is that a smaller version of White Wings? I saw the one David Nutt built up here and then again in Florida some years later. What rig will yours have? http://www.dicknewick.com/WhiteWings.html

StevenBauer
02-02-2008, 03:45 PM
Izzat The Lurker?

JimConlin
02-02-2008, 03:58 PM
It's the same idea as White Wings, but primarily a daysailer. Dick describes the boat as a 'three-hulled Rozinante', and i've tried to think of it as a gent's daysailer that will top fifteen knots now and then.
David Nutt built White Wings(and a nice job). She's now in Edgartown. There's a sistership of WhiteWings in B.C. Spark will have essentially the same Ljungstrom cat yawl rig with unstayed carbon spars. I'm nearly done with the spars.

Lurker? I don't know any lurkers.

This crazy weather we're having has been playing havoc with my WBF Challenge plans. Twice in one week I've had to cancel sailing with Forumites, first with Russ, then with Jim. Damn thunderstorms. Let's try again guys.

Yup. It's Dick Newick's 'Spark'. The boat is named Damfino.

Jim, curious about how you handle the main. Does the mast revolve to furl it up like that, and reefing ?

The mainmast is round in section and rotates. There's a spool just above the deck and a line on the spool to rotate the mast. There's a #32 winch on the house top for the purpose.

A couple of turns of the mast reduce the mainsail area by half. Crank more to furl the sail. There's a sun cover on the leech. In operation, it's like a roller jib. I think we've figured out how to fiddle the sheeting angle as the clew comes forward. We'll see.

We worried a lot about the mast bearings' design and finally decided to go with the simplest design alternatives. To my delight, they seem to work OK.

The other unusual feature is that it's a Ljungstrom rig, meaning that there are actually two mainsails sewn to the same luff tape and when going downwind, the two plies of the main are separated and are spread port & starboard. The Ljungstrom rig is an old idea which did not work at all well on narrow monohulls because of the narrow sheeting base. On a 23' wide multihull with narrow (~12' on the foot) sails, it's a different story. The sails set stably and in light-moderate condition, the downwind speed is within a knot or two of the wind speed. In other words, the apparent wind nearly disappears. Maybe the guys with the prodders, screachers and other lingerie can go faster downwind, but not by much.

Come for a sail! Our mutual friend was out for a sail last week.

Wouldn't I love to. ;)
Mind you, I've always stayed clear of bigger multis... afraid I might like it too much.
Thats really interesting about the mainsail. Most of the guys here probably wouldn't run deep enough to utilise the Ljungstrom factor... they tend to sail the angles and their mains are always trimmed as if they're on the wind, so thats quite a fascinating insight.
Great looking boat, they're so dramatic in appearance, I just bet she's exciting to sail.

I have come late to this thread but anyone coming thru Cape Breton, NS is welcome for a sail aboard Iolaire. We have just finished (I hope) 3 weeks of rain and if I can get the lawns mowed back in shape will be ready for a sailing again. We should have a least another 8 weeks of good sailing for this year!! Mooring is in Baddeck so PM us if you are interested.

Well, we finally did have some very nice weather in Portland recently, and I had the honor and privilege of playing crewmember on Steven Bauer's beautiful Talisman. Thanks again Steven!

OK, I went back and reread the challenge, and it doesn't say anything about having to take a Forumite sailing on a wooden boat...

So.... between taking Bobby (hokifan) saililng on Drift Away and giving him the yard-based tour of Sarah, hopefully you'll give me credit :)

Thanks for being such a good sport Bobby and letting me drag you up and down the waterway and around town.

P.S. - I still think I should get some kind of bonus points for Claudia breaking her foot on Sarah. Lots of folks take folks sailing, but how many toss in an evening trip to the emergency room??? :D

You are so far in the lead, Margo , that you don't need any bonus points. :);):). We haven't done very well with the Challenge so far this season. We've had BillR and Ron Paro. And Mark, but just motoring from the marina to the mooring field. We had many more last season. We had a glorious sail this afternoon... for about ten minutes before the fog rolled in. I've never seen fog close in so fast. About ten minutes from clear sky, sunny day to this:

We hung out on the mooring for a while to see if it would lift or blow through but no joy.
