We've been getting a lot of these lately out on the horizon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crepuscular_rays, so I went to Wikipedia for an explanation (of sorts) and followed a link to a photo of a Jacob's Ladder wall sculpture in Bath, England:

The facade at the cathedral in Bath is pretty neat. They explain to you that some are climbing up while others are climbing down... IIRC, when you get to the crypt, there were some carvings showing what happened to those who climbed down...

I didn't know they were called that. Maine has cornered the market on them though. Nice Wikipedia entry. Also called Buddha's fingers and backstay of the sun (wicepedia uses the word "brace" incorrectly)

Maine has nice cloud and light but hardly a corner on the market. I have a number of friends who are artists who play with light, most notably Sam Barber. When we're out sailing and have the fingers I like to tease that he can't paint it because in human hands it's always trite.

We just toured the Cathedral and the Roman Baths. The Cathedral is a remarkable place. It's remarkable to see the burial markers inside that date back centuries. Comments from loved ones buried hundreds of years ago. Amazing place, Bath.

Pt. Vicente a few days ago. . .The whale census stalwarts were bundled up, with binoculars in hand, and there were a number of trawlers just off the point. Evidently a large school of Humboldt Squid was the attraction.
