Low speed water jets. Maybe good for sailboat auxiliary?

The air cooled Briggs looks exactly like my old John Deere lawn mower, which was VERY LOUD !!!

Maybe good for sucking bottom... my experience with jets is that they are hoorendous in shallow water at low speeds. 3.5 hp ain't capable of high speed, what's the use???

That far down the HP ladder I would take a old fashioned outboard anytime.
Pump drives that use a centrifical pump need adequate revs to work properly. Pumps are not efficient at low revs. So, HP for HP propellers give better response across the RPM band and may give more ultimate thrust because there is a power loss across the pump.
Pump drives that inhale debris can suffer damage that is very expensive to fix.
Pump drives cannot ususally be screened well enough to keep out all debris. If you are addicted to criusing in the shallows you will eventually suck up something. Even tho' it is not destructive, long viney vegitation can entwine itself inside the pump and require disassembly.
Not until this outfit answers these type of questions can an adequate judgement be made.

Interesting test data. Agree the 3.5 B&S is going to be noisy as the dickens. Would be interested to see how my 1958 3hp Johnson would compare for bollard pulll and speed. Comparison would be enlightening.

My interest is using an outboard for a canoe. This looks like it could have potential but I'm afraid it will be way too heavy and very complex compared to what's out there. I can get a Minn Kota with 30# thrust for about $115 less battery and there is no way they can compete with that. IMHO

Jets are very application specific. There are no one size fits all.

I put it up because it may be just ticket for someone.

If you look through the website you'll see plenty of applications of bigger motors pushing work boats at low-moderate speeds. My question about sailboat auxiliary doesn't apply to the johnboat motor, or to water so shallow that oars will do.
