Hello everyone, I was just wondering if I could get any input on Devlins winter wren 2. I hope to order plans Monday, just curious if any one here has built her. Also the plans include both gaff rig or bermuda rig for an amateur sailor which would you suggest?
Thanks for any help

Welcome to the forum!
Nice boat. She's been on my (very long) wish list for a couple years. Either rig will be easy to learn but I like the look of the gaff on that particular boat. Good luck with her and keep us posted with your progress. Pictures of the process are mandatory.

Welcome to the Forum!
The gaff rig looks saltier to me -- what is your level of experience in building and sailing?

I've also seen somewhere on the web this design rigged as a gaff cutter. Pretty sharp.

I prefer the look of the gaff rig also. This will be my 2nd wood boat (1st stitch and glue) as for sailing no experience at all. I wanted to build this boat last year but went with a stevensons weekender design instead. Cute little boat and easy to build but I decided to build her as cheap as possible to learn how to fillet, scarf ply, loft and experiment with. Not something I wanted to try first time on expensive material. Having scrap ply around the shop already just seemed like a good place to start. No where however did it say how enjoyable and addicting boat building can be. I hope to start her next fall and wet the weekender this spring so no pics for a while.
Thorne is SF San Francisco if so have you seen the Nordic folkboats? That is my dream build but stuck in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies its just that a dream. I just started reading the folkboat story I got from the admiral for Christmas interesting how she came about!
If you go for the gaff version an outhaul for the jib or a roller furl would be a good idea. Bowsprits on small boats are a pain otherwise. I prefer the inboard sail plan Bermuda version http://www.devlinboat.com/dcwinterwrenII.htm :

Sorry Jim the roller furl is to wrap the jib to the forestay? Just learning the terms.

Eric, choose the one you, A) know the best
B) like the best
C) can afford
Nothing else really matters at this point as you are still about a year away from having to seriously address rigging issues.

Thanks everyone, I just ordered the plans.

Eric.B, ya gotta post lotsa picks so all of us between builds can vicariously build a boat through you. Naturally, you may receive the odd bit of advice, solicited or otherwise :).

Good call. If she hadn't been a foot or two more than what we were looking for, and if Shilling (http://www.willowbayboats.co.uk/shilling.htm)'s lines hadn't knocked us dead, we be building one right now.
Probably be further along, too...

Very sweet boat and not the one I was thinking about at all when I saw Shilling.......it made me think MacNaughton had a new design to their ''coin series'' as in here:http://www.macnaughtongroup.com/coin.htm
Happy building!!
