Hugh's post reminded me of something.
My father has a Makita 2040 in his shop (20+ years of Yeoman's service - or would that be stevedore's service...) that had something get jammed in the pressure bar and chip breakers, damaging them. We've tried going back through Makita's standard repair channels without luck. Anybody have any other suggestions on where to obtain parts other than EBay?
We're limping along on my DeWalt 12 1/2 for the moment...

Not yet, but certainly worth a try. Somebody had recommended a place in Plaistow, NH that does machinery rebuilds. Anybody know the name?

Google Toolparts direct.com
They have parts diagrams and can probably supply the parts.

This may be so obvious as to be slly, or recently have changed, but to my knowledge, Makita still supplies parts for many of the older planers. I have gotten knives from them for mine as recently as six months ago, and was told at that time that parts are still available through them. You might give that a try if you haven't already.

Lew, we tried though the (2) local Makita dealers that the company lists for replacements and spares. We've not had luck with them at all. Knives are no problem as are rollers (Although at a HUGE price - over $200/roller!) The 2040 has been considered obsolete for a number of years.
Stiletto's suggestion seems to be the ticket. They have the parts and are promising a decent delivery.

Im glad that worked out and its good to know for myself. Mine's still running strong, and I like it even if it is a bit of a brick.

Hi there, I am the proud owner of the Makita 2040 planer ,but alas the feed roler have given up the ghost ,I can buy them new $458.00 nz dollars each!!!!!!!!!! Well out my budget what would really appreciate if any body could give the thckness of the rollers ,as i can get new neoprene rubber bonded on and then turn them down in the lathe for a fraction of the new price,i am pretty sure that they 65mm dia (2.558" inch) if any body could confirm this for me i would be very gratefull regards Ross (wood guy)
