HELP! I need Baggywrinkles, anyone know where??

Hello, although not new to reading threads here at the forum, I am new to posting and hope I can find some good advise/direction. I have a 1963, 50' S&S sloop and seek a source for baggywrinkles for my foreward lower stays and possibly for other points of potential chafe. Wondering if anyone out there can help with this.

Thanks a bunch in advance

get a board about 4-5 feet long, cheap 1 x 4 fir, drive two nails in it and make your own out of old rope...will take a few minutes and free except for the old rope...use three strand nylon. That is probably the simplest thing to do for the boat except for wiping the dew off the gun'ls.

Can't buy baggywrinkle that I know of, although there is any amount of 'tailor made' chaffing gear, foam tube and whatnot. Nothing looks as good as a nicely weathered baggywrinkle, or elicits more questions.. ;)

Old rope, cut into 10" lengths, unlaid into strands, middled, and ring hitched onto a pair of seine twine strands maybe 2 fathoms long. Keep them more or less even. You'll do hundreds of hitches of the old stuff, so make yourself comfortable.

When you have enough lengths of this stuff, sieze one end to your backstay, and wind it tightly around until you have a 12 - 18" caterpiller and sieze the other end. sieze twice, both ends, you will suffer no end of aggravation when your sail flogs it loose on a reach.

If you have any kids nearby, they love to do this stuff. :)

Ya made me look....

Being a motor guy and not a sail guy I had no idea what a baggywrinkle was. Learn something new every day.

Wow, what a gang. Thanks a bunch. As urged by a friend also, I will make my own and thanks for the diagram, that kind of says it all along with the site my friend sent me to. I am in Port Townsend now, so I am unsure about finding old line to use (jesting of course). Although it's been years since I did any kind if splicing and whipping to any degree, it is time to get back to it and this time, never stop (I have a real good riggers kit on-board). The diagrams are great and learning about the International Guild of Knot Tyers has been very informative too, pretty way-out there stuff. I will post the picts of my Baggywrinkles, when I have completed some that are worthy of posting without bringing on due embarrassment. Starting today, I will no longer pass by old piles of line. I like the idea manila though, don't know. I basically refuse to allow polypropylene on my boat (and plastic, and aluminum, and fiberglass, a microwave, etc.). If I had a dollar for every foot of old line I've thrown out . . . . . . . . . .
