I had some trouble with a B&S 375 a while back and just googled it up.

You may find its just a busted key on the shaft.

I'd rather find the points all furry from the rain ...if it has points .I don't even know where to look...and I'm not that keen on a major dismantle .

How old is the engine?
Later models do not have any points and condensors, rather it on the two leggy thingy that sparkplug cable is coming out of... there is a couple of smaller wires... One of them lead back to cut-off switch, dis-connect the one to your switch.. Try again start it.. If it runs.. The switch is grounded (bad)... To stop the engine, just touch the wire to bare metal on the machine...

It may have a "low oil" sensor, check the oil...
(shuts down the engine if the oil is low, I have seen these defective, if the oil level is ok, it can be bypassed for a test)

in 9 years of building and maintaining briggs class kart racing engines for my son, i've had only one magneto go south. they're pretty reliable..... if you don't have any spark and your motor doesn't have points, it's probably shot. if the motor you have has points, the most common problem is the condensor as long as the points are breaking open. if you spin the motor over and can see the points break open and no spark, it's the condensor.

go to NAPA dealer and ask them for thier points eliminator chip for small engines. they're less than 20 bucks and you will never have any problems again....converts points ignition to cdi. easy to install, it just goes in the wire from the magneto to ground.

If it has points they will be under the flywheel.
