Well, in a fit of guilt this weekend I updated the Albert Strange Assoc (http://www.albertstrange.org) website with a dozen varied tales which had piled up. Here are four of them, each picture links to the story.

Dick,

Went to the site and found the new posts delightful, especially the "Riddle" story by Russell Read (http://www.albertstrange.org/?p=232).

Note the link in your post has one R too many in the URL. Correct link thus. (http://www.albertstrange.org/)

Best,

Russ

Ps. Any new pics of your own dear Constance?

Thanks Russ, fixed the link. We had probably the largest ever assembly of AS boats (which is not saying many - 6!) at the annual Meet (http://www.albertstrange.org/?p=215#more-215) on the East Coast in September. I came away with disappointingly few photos of Constance, they are here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dickw/sets/72157603772763265/). This is the year I should finally sort her out (how ridiculous that must sound), last year was disrupted by family events so I hardly sailed her. A few trim issues to resolve. She is 2hrs drive away, I envy you having Sjogin apparently on your doorstep. Just caught up on your blog, lovely pictures as usual!

Thanks! As a transplanted Englishman it all makes me feel quite nostalgic. Love that muddy brown river water and pale blue sky. Constance is a very pretty boat!

Dick,

Thanks for the pics and links. Hope Constance has more use this year.

I just joined the ASA and look forward to reading more of the member's exploits. Any American members? Thad?

I have a serious Griffiths' Jones and hope to heave to in the East Swin someday, waiting for a fair tide.

Best,

Russ

Thanks, Thad. Have you ever been over for a meeting or member visit? Will you be at Mystic this year?

Russ, I haven't been to England for any ASA meetings yet and I do plan to have SEA HARMONY at Mystic once again.
Tim, What do you want to know? It is a great design and VENTURE is the original boat, built to the design. The brothers who commissioned the design had her built and the next year had Earnest Woods build CHARM, going from 29.5' to 33'. I would judge that VENTURE was a little small to be the perfect two person cruising boat they were after, but they were charmed by the design and stuck with it. A few years later they had a second CHARM built but 40', making me think families wanted to be included in the sailing plans. 15 years after CHARM !!, one of them had SEA HARMONY built (also by Woods) going back to the 33' length. Last I knew CHARM II was still waiting for restoration. If you get out this way you should come for a sail.

Venture was comprehensively restored over some 2-3 years, by Jamie Clay (co-author of the 2nd Albert Strange book) and Jim Maynard in Essex, and launched in 2006. She is literally a piece of furniture, but quite small, 29ft and slim with long overhangs. I for one (6ft 2in and 200 lbs) would not even attempt to negotiate around her mast and through the oval folding door to the forepeak and heads!

But she is staggeringly beautiful in her proportions and workmanship. Her shape seems to work well at larger scales, hence Charm and Sea Harmony at 33ft, and Charm II at 40ft (whereabouts and condition now unknown, last seen in Brighton). Venture now lives on the west coast of Scotland. Photos by Den Philips (http://www.denphillipsphotos.co.uk/).
