Hh'mmm. I know a bloke with a lathe that will take timbers up to 40' long -- telegraph poles, let alone masts. As far as I know, it's the biggest lathe in Oz. It has a whole set of intermediate bearings to support the workpiece, and setting it up for a new job takes him about half a day....

That looks like mid 19th century to me. I had a Prybil from about 1895 once, the "High Whycombe" style, and it had the wooden drive blocks, leather belts, overhead shaft and blocks and a circa ww1 GE 3 phase motor that weighed about 200 lbs and pushed 1 horsepower. That thing ran like a champ, and it turned out a lot of work.
