View Full Version : Recommendations for a Cape Cod weekly rental?
I may be renting a house (or a large apartment) for a week in Cape Cod this summer for a family event. Ideally, it would come with a dock and/or mooring for a 20' sailboat. I think I prefer the bay side, but it's not critical.
Recommendations? Or at least where should I look for it?

It's not clear how big a place you need, but here's a start.

ask for Steve Gould

ask for Quisset and Woods Hole for deep water. West Falmouth also possible.

Ask about Chapoquoit Island
Thanks, I'll look into these links.
By the way, it it actually feasible to rent a house with a dock and/or mooring for a reasonable amount of money? Or such houses only come with butlers, gardeners, a full stable of horses, etc. etc.?
And if it's not feasible, what are my options to keep a boat nearby other than renting a slip from a marina for a week?

Here in my area of Maine, rental houses with a dock and/or mooring generally rent for $2-3000 per week. That's mainly because those house that have those amenities are on the shore, where taxes are especially high and the reason people rent them out is to subsidize those taxes. Mooring rentals go for $165 for a week (if available) at our local yacht club, which includes launch service.
Finding places to launch the boat and store the trailer is something to consider also. DeLorme maps can help with the former.
It's possible, but there are problems - the town I live in requires all boats on a town mooring to be registered to the holder of the mooring permit, for instance. So a friend of mine who has a 1 bedroom aerie that she rents out in the summer with a fabulous view, and holds two town moorings, cannot offer one of them to a renter.
There are, however, moorings that are rented from the town by boatyards, like in Quissett, and they can be rented from the boatyard, although I'd say you need to get on that tout suite.
Those moorings, however, will not come with private docks. You will have to drive to them.
In Falmouth there are no harbors lacking boat ramps, so all trailerable boats can be launched. The problem comes when one has to leave the truck with trailer somewhere. Parking around the waterfront is at a premium and often restricted to people with town beach or parking permits.
Given that some of Falmouth's harbors have a 30-year wait list for deep water boats, we consider ourselves lucky to have what we've got.
As for the rest of the Cape, Ian McColgin may be able to tell you somethings about Hyannis area, and you also might contact Pease's boatyard in Chatham and Arey's Pond Boatyard in S. Orleans for further information.
There is a much bigger tide on the Cape Cod Bay side and deep moorings are scarcer as well as your egress and ingress times limited by the tide. On that side most of the Cape is salt marsh.

There are very few Cape Cod Bay side rentals with docks. About half of the Bay side is tidal flat. If your 20ft boat can ground out or is trailerable, you'll have more options. We're located in Brewster www.candleberryinn.com (http://www.candleberryinn.com) and although you're not looking for a B&B, we might be able to help you. There are some great rentals in the area. The best local realtor we recommend is Kinlin-Grover http://www.vacationcapecod.com/ here in Brewster. By the way, our town doesn't have any mooring regulations. You can anchor/moor your boat anywhere on the tidal flats. Of course that limits it's use, but you can't beat the price!
I am on the verge of grabbing a weekly house rental in Chatham. The house is a few hundred feet away from Stage Harbor and the owner says he'll provide a mooring. There seems to be even a dock, although it's a small floating thing -- not something you tie a boat to and leave it.

Great! I was wondering how you were progressing with that.
Life is really hard when one can afford a week long rental with mooring on Stage Harbor!
Beautiful place. You done good.

Good place for surf casting and flyfishing for stripers and blues. Have a great time! Fingers crossed for good weather!

Define "reasonable". You'll be paying 6 months rent anywhere else for a week on Cape Cod in high season.

Chatham's a great location. The flats west of Monomoy Island are prime striper territory. Hyannis is a days sail to the west. Bass River is about 3 hours away. Local watering hole- The Squire. Pease Brothers Boat Yard is worth a look see.
Okay, I'm leaving for a week on Cape Cod in Chatham and towing my boat along.
If you see a 20-foot yawl with tanbark sails bumbling around the Stage Harbor area and answering to Mote, give me a holler.
