Dear Captain Zebidiah Adzhefter,

I'm about to jump into the 32' swoopy glass project boat (hey ...there are low hours on this diesel) but I'm wondering if I might be more happy cruising in the 23' junk rigged life boat. The glass boat is all there. The 23' life boat, drawn by Howard Chapelle, is still on the page.

It's about when things break. The glass cruiser's standing rigging is expensive. I could live without an engine. The sails are just o.k, and might get me there. Then you've got that 35' aluminium mast. If nothing breaks the swoopster is a great boat to cruise -lot's of room for the Swedish Bikini Team.

The concrete ballasted, strip planked, junk rigged, Rustoleum painted, non-epoxied, nail fastened, no engined, Block Island 'Cowhorn 23' seems a lot more simple to operate -and even uninviting to pirates There is room for two. Wood and glue for that broken mast repair is abundant. A hard grounding would require strong oxen, a few graving pieces and a little paint, instead of massive amounts of cash thrown into the wind chasing yacht repair in Algarve.

I really want the 32' glass hull. But I think I may need to go with the life boat approach to the budget cruise.

I tossed a coin and it came up heads for the yacht. However, it's possible Satan is working through quarter dollars these days.

What to do?

Your Nephew,
Tanbark Spanker

Do you have pictures? Especially of the 23 footer?
