The winged keel design makes this one of the most modern and fastest 12 Meters ever built. she looks it too:rolleyes:

lol. Thanks, John. What a reputation I must have.

Is that the boat that had the canard on it? I can't remember too many Mull 12's and I thought that they had changed the underbody on that one to a more conventional configuration.

12's are making a bit of a comeback and you can find the odd duck like that one for a song, but unless I had a million dollar budget I wouldn't even consider it. Heck, these days you can't even find enough friends to sail a three man boat without some trouble. I can just imagine getting together 12 people (and how much it would cost in today's dollars). I will pass, but if someone else wanted to buy it I would volunteer to let them take me out on it sometime.

Remember, these things only had to last a year or two. They really weren't built for longevity. :)

No, I disagree with that. They were built to Lloyd's standards and you'd be amazed at the percentage of 12's that are still around and healthy. A lof people forget that the 12's have been around 100 years and were only drafted into the America's cup races in the late '50's (iirc). That boat has a somewhat checkered past but with some investment and the right crew I am positive that it could be a fun and effective racer.

It's a little outside of my ballpark, but I would sincerely love to drive one of those upwind for awhile, just the once. Too bad the Swedes weren't successful with the tiller. That would have been awesome.

I crewed on "Newsboy" ("Easterner") for many years. The boat went aground on the jetty at LA Yacht Club and pounded for three days before being floated off. She survived a cradle collapse during a haul out as well as a honking galley fire. The boat is still sailing! A credit to her builders and fine materials used in her construction.

NO NO NO NO NO...

The rule for metre boats encourages longevity. Mickey has it, built to Lloyd's A1.

The 8 that did well this year was a 1987 boat... Hollandia, built specifically for the World's in '05 was chasing her all over the place!

Wasn't that Tom Blackaller's boat in '87? Third after the third Round Robin. A fairly fast boat. The hardware shown is worth probably more than the asking price.

Then again, that's the logic that got me where I am with Octavia

I stand corrected. I just remember seeing (one of the) Stars and Stripes when it was in Lake Union several years ago and I was surprised to see that a lot of the rigging and hardware was not stainless and already badly rusted. I don't remember, was Stars and Stripes a 12?
