Gives one an idea of the reality of small boat fishing in this country must have been like. Not so romantic.

Just another form of bowsprit I thought. If the basis of the boat is a dug-out log and then planked on top as in Polynesian canoes, then that form of bowsprit is the most efficient and strongest way to do it i'd think.
