Which is preferable to acheive a lasting bond, applying a bedding compound / adhesive directly to unpainted material .... or .....
paint first then apply ?

The paint being used is brightsides if that makes any difference.

I'm wondering about situations on both raw wood and also gelcoat.

thanks for your thoughts and experience
John

Paint first, them bed. When the bedding gives up the paint will still provide some protection. Don't use an adhesive bedding compound. If you screw or bolt a fitting on, sooner or later you'll need to take it off again, to rebed if nothing else.
