If it happened once, it happened a half dozen times today....

I'd come careening up the companionway and smack my (now nearly flat ) head on the boom :D

Seriously, after the first couple of times, I managed mainly glancing blows...

It's odd in a way. For seven years I've had nothing but deck. Now there's wires and all kinds of stuff to duck under .

But it was cool just standing there earlier holding on to a shroud and leaning on the mast. Having a shroud to grab on to definitely makes it easier to swing one's leg over the lifelines. ;)

It was also cool as the wind gusted in the high 30s and she just shook it off. For years I've known that it was my job to keep her safe, and I was actually conscious - as I worked below all safe and warm - that she was taking care of me for a change. :)

It's her turn to look after you. Soon enough, you'll be back on her case and her account. Enjoy the golden moments. You have earned them, baby! Long may they last!

Tie the boom to the mizzen shrouds. (sorry for the pragmatic answer)

Gareth - it is off to port - courtesy of the three notches in the boom gallows. I'm just a dork.

On a postive note, there's the Magic Ramp :)

It must be magic. Every time I went up to the car and back about the time I'd put my foot on the ramp going down to the dock I'd have to smile. :)

No matter how tired or how aggravated, I never got more than two steps down the ramp without looking at her and breaking into a :D grin. :D

Margo, the same thing happened to me when I first put the boom on. :)

I can't wait to see her under sail.

Errr...Whoa. I couldn't get away with that!:D

Thank God for powerboats! No messy booms in the way, or spare lines and sticks masquerading as useful:D

Well actually........I remembered BETTY-B had a mast right as I was pulling into my new covered slip back in 2002. Oopsies... :o

Wow, I hadnt thought about that project in years. I'll get right on it....

Hey Forumites.....

It is best we don't mention the meeting of our minds with the boom. We don't want the Government safety weenies to mandate the use of helmets while sailing.

Ya gotta be a midget to avoid Airlie's boom. I ain't no midget. But I ain't gonna wear a helmet either.

I'd love to see an x ray of my skull. If Bones or Gus Grisham dug me up they'd be interested.

I'm sure I'm going to be the next boom-a-holic! Thankfully I have a hard head already. Just glad its wood or we'd all have dented booms! Be careful.

Do you ever hit your head on the boom gallows? That looks like it would be worse.

Back when I was building another boat......Jim Brown told me to make the cabin lower.....and lower the boom.....
The idea was that if the headroom/boom room was about the same altitude as my head I would continually have a knot up there....If I deliberately knew the overhead was considerably lower, and the boom was lower, then I would always expect it to be 5'6" and always duck or bend over without banging my noggin......

Such a problem to have! :)

Having watched every one of your posts for the 6 months I've been around (and dug back into the archive to read the older ones), I have to add my CONGRATULATIONS to the huge pile you already have Margo.

Your restoration, and your writing about it, has been awesome and inspiring. She's gorgeous, and knowing a bit about the "adventures" of bring her back has been most entertaining.

You have every right to glow with pride. Thanks for sharing with us!
