thx for the good advise on not using GitRot and instead patching using step scarfing. I dug out the rot last night and have a 2" by 4 " patch to make. Much easier than the patch J Dillion is going to have to make from looking at his pictures(sorry about the size of your patch job).

I found a source of mahgony veneer and am going to order afew feet. Questions for the group. Does it matter if each patch has the grain running in the same direction or would cross grain patches be stronger? Also, do I need to coat each patch with plan epoxy and let the wood absorb the liquid and then put epoxy/hardner on the patch and lay it in place? If I staple the patches in place should I pull the staple before the next patch? In another thread someone suggested applying CPES to the wood first to seal off any rot that might have been missed. Is this necessary?

If I can find a camera I will post pictures as I go along.

see you at the windward mark!

Jim,
I rarely post here, but I am concerned that there has been no response to your post yet. I am wondering about your use of the terms "plan epoxy" and "epoxy/hardener". I infer from your text that the former refers to epoxy resin and the latter a mix of resin and hardener.

I think what you intend to do is mix a required ratio of epoxy and hardener, and then use this 'plain' epoxy to precoat the raw wood. This would be followed by mixing some thickener (microfibers?) to the plain epoxy for the actual glue-up. While I have notions about the procedure I would use regarding grain directions (I would cross the grain), staples , etc., I do not have the appropriate credentials or experience to tell you what to do.

Personally, I would cross the grain and as for staples, if I used them, I would use monel, stainless or plastic and leave them...I would apply all of the layers at one go)
