Where else does a topic like this belong except in the bilge? I recently bought a boat that came with a porta-potty and have no clue how to use it. Having never owned or used one of the marine types, I'm quite confused. It seems to be an older model and I did some internet searching for similar models. This is the closest I could find.

There's what seems to be some sort of pump to pressurize something in the upper unit and a screw-on cap opposite the pump. The lower unit has a handle that pulls out to open the lower unit to the upper unit. Can anyone help me out?

Practice without using it for real first. :D
I had one in a travel trailer during the Dark Ages. Water goes in the top. You does yer duty just like the real thing at home. The pump provides "flushing" water. You open the gate valve and flush into the bottom container. The two halves seperate when it's time to dump the contents of the bottom container into a real toilet. There should be a screw cap on the back of the bottom half for emptying.
Good luck!

I have used these on many occasions and think they are great. Simple, clean & cheap. Start by pouring chemical toilet chemical in the lower (holding) tank, directly through the waste opening (2-4 ounces, depending on brand) and then enough water to cover the bottom. The upper tank is filled with fresh water. The bellows pump provides the flushing flow. Empty into any sewer portal. The two tanks unclip and the waste tank can be transported alone. My current model has directions on the tank. With juditious use, the tank holds about three days worth. Rick ;)

The ensyme chemical for lower unit comes in two formulations, dry and liquid. Experts in the field say that the liquid enzyme is more active. Some people prefer to use the dry chemical.
Moby's Law of Potties #1: Keep an eye on the level of waste in the lower unit. When it gets within an inch of the spade valve, DON'T USE IT ANYMORE!
Moby's Law of Potties #2: Women with a frequent desire to urinate can fill a Porta Potty much quicker than a crew of guys.
Moby's Law of Potties #3: Some Commercial Concerns having public toilets do not want you to tote your potty in with you.
Moby's Law of Potties #4: $5.00 may change the mind of the Manager of said Commercial Concern.

Here is a good summary of the advantages of the porta-potti: http://www.pocketcruisers.com/art_portapotti.html

If you put a runway of toilet paper from the rim to the hole it's possible to do a serious job in it and have the whole mess slide into the base with no skid marks to clean up. Bombs away! :D

Check out Airhead, made in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. It composts. I have a different composting head and have not emptied it since August 2000.
Good luck.

Throw it overboard and use a five gallon mud bucket with a plastic bag in it. Toss the plastic bag overboard when you're done! (Closed course with a professional driver. Do not attempt these maneuvers at home!)

A most entertaining thread. Thanks for the good tips.

Referring to Moby's law #5: What does Ontario Canada have against porta potties?

Against the law on a boat as I understand it. Now, I wonder, can you own and use a Porta-Pottie in a small RV the way I did? In Ontario? Somebody tell me I'm wrong. Please?

That's the weirdest-looking cedar deck bucket I've ever seen.

Check at a good RV supply store for porta pottie parts. If there's a Camping World store in your area, it's worth the trip.
