My boat is out of the water waiting for me to apply some love and attention to the hull. Its spring down under and is raining only every other day. Its time to start thinking about preparation before a repaint, hopefully to get her back in the water before the Louis Vuitton challenge series is finished.

My boat is carvel planked in 1"Macrocapa, (It a lovely NZ hard wood), with cotton in the seams. I propose to completely remove the existing paint system back down to bare wood. I propose to seal with International Everdure (essentially the same as CPES). Prior to repainting the moisture content of the wood should be 18-20%, which means I suspect the seams may open a bit. If the planks are given a coating of CPES will it affect the ability of the seams to close tight again when the boat is back in the water.

Also on the outer surface of the hull, I propose to use a synthetic sealant on the outside of each seam. I have seen recommended the use of urethane or polysulfide sealants. Can anyone recommend a band name of such a sealant, I would be very grateful?

Thanks in advance

Gaff, ain't it depressing to keep seeing that big fat "zero" under the "Reply" column.

I don't have the knowledge to help you, but perhaps I can draw this back to the top and get it noticed for you.

Later,

Phil

Gaff, if you do a search of previous posts on this subject you'll find more info than you'll want. That might explain the lack of response now. Good Luck. Detco is one brand by the way and there are many others. Fisheries Supply in Seattle is a good source at 206-632-4462 or www.fisheriessupply.com (http://www.fisheriessupply.com)
