Anyway... I'm wondering what people have for resources for leather for rigging, oars etc. Im not far from Seattle, so I am especially interested in Pacific Northwest availabilty.

These folks sell half and full hides in various thicknesses and finishes. They were very helpful when I was looking for leather for my catboat Jenny.

Go online and take a look.......

The Chandlery Store at the Wooden Boat Foundation in Port Townsend stocks Oil Tanned Latigo Red Leather that is greased with tallow. This is the traditional form of boat leather. It is custom produced specifficaly for use in a marine environment.

It doesn't show up in their online store, though.

A lot of gear is not listed on line. A phone call will clear all.

Not to mention, Bob is 90 seconds away from being able to walk in the door anyway.

Let's go over there Bob. I havnt been in there for a couple months. You know they lowered the price on a bunch of the bronze right? Some of it substantially..

Yes, Jay is right about this. The Wooden Boat Foundation Chandlery has many items in the shop that are not always listed online. I think it is simply because they are things that come and go, and are mostly hand selected by buyer preference. I am aware of the leather there. And I agree that it is superior. I just wanted to now of some alternatives, especially for half or full hides at an easier price for me. But yes- the WBF leather is really nice stuff. Thanks everyone for the helpful notes.

Dan- You and me walking into the WBF Chandlery together:

Check your yellow pages. We found a leather supply shop in downtown Victoria....we found a bin of scraps in various weights and colors, all the way to full hides...dyes, tools...you name it (including about every belt buckle in the universe!).

There is a wholesale leather distributor in seattle. I've been in there and they let me look through the full hides (I was making some boots and a doublet). Thy have piles of hides and all the awls and needles also.

In the stockyards area of Oklahoma City, just off Western Ave.....and a couple of blocks from Cattlemans Cafe (best steaks anywhere) is a shop with more or less wholesale leather stuff....makes a Tandy catalog look like a short order form. Also patterns galore....I got my saddle/harness etc stuff there as kits or just components, saddle holster/saddlebags, chaps and all that stuff, plus the patterns for the buckskinning stuff when I played with those fellers...

Halford and Hide in Edmonton, Alberta is also a good source for leather and furs and the gear to put it all together.

You might try a shoe repair shop. I got a nice thick piece of leather for my oars from the local shop for $10.

This (http://www.leatherpost.com/)may or may not be what you're after.

Sorry, folks, had to be done.

Lots of good ideas here.

- I've used Tandy on 145th and Aurora.
- There's another place here in Seattle called Boat Leather (http://www.boatleather.com/). I don't think they have a storefront, but are primarily mail order.

I was just outside messing the leathers on a set of oars. The leathers were pretty nasty, and I just flipped them inside out, laced them back on, and rubbed them with neatsfoot oil. They are not good as new, but they are better than before.
