We launched Montagu Whaler VANCOUVER today after a leisurely winter refit. She's been out for 8 months so I expected some taking up to be required. We backed her in until we were nearly knee deep in the stern then thought better of it, she's back in the club yard being wetted inside for a few days! Previous owner recommends diluted antifreeze inside her if out for the entire winter, somehow I forgot that tip.

Nearly all the brightwork is teak, treated with Deks Olje (took 6 days to sand off the original varnish).

Location: Greenwich YC, London, whose centenary year this is.

The boat's name follows the tradition of naming a ship's boat after her parent vessel. Training Ship Vancouver is a Sea Cadet establishment at Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England, named after local man George Vancouver, the naval captain who surveyed the coast of BC 230-odd years ago. The boat was built in 1943 (see stem engraving) but we don't know who her parent ship was before going to the cadets in the 1960s or 70s. Although her serial number is marked also, the Navy no longer has records. Hundreds of Montagu Whalers were pensioned off in the 60s in favour of what proved to be an unpopular replacement, the '3-in-1', and many were burned, bronze fittings and all, due to lack of new homes for them.

Probably a bit too much slop in those shrouds. And no, I don't polish bronze, life's too short. More pictures in a few days when she finally goes in!

That's a great looking boat. Only the navy polishes bronze. Interesting tiller arrangement on the mizzen.

Would she have to be smaller to be named "TT Vancouver"?

Lovely boat!

Interesting to see that you are based at Greenwich as I bumped into an old pal at the sailboat show at Alexandra Palace who now sails there-small world sometimes.
