Does anybody here have a solution to preventing knots bleeding through paint? I have always put shellac over the knots before painting but my experience is that it doesn't always work. I want to put panelled wainscoting in a bedroom and it will be painted so I would like to get a solution. I could go with moulding grade lumber but the cost would likely be through the roof. I could also go with MDF or somesuch but there would be a whole lot of ugly joints that I don't want.

Of course, I still have to sell the wife on this idea.

Use BIN. It's a white pigmented shellac. Really nasty stains might need a couple of coats.

Zinsser (sp?) primer. First clean the knot with acetone to remove surface oil.

This BIN stuff which is made by Zinsser might be what I need. I will drop them a line and see if I can get it locally or will have to order by mai. Thanks for the info.

Should be available in ANY hardware or paint store. The big box stores should have it too.

KILZ is essentially the same as Bin- I've used it (Kilz) alot- works well. Just stay away from the water-based stuff- no better than regular paint.

You can get BIN at any Home Depot. Good stuff for the purpose. One coat on the knots, then another coat over all and Bob's your uncle ... no wait, you're Bob.
