Has anyone got handy the regs on HIN location? I have a case that's out of the ordinary, there being no transom. What are the alternatives?

GRRRRRrrr!
I've tried three freaking times to post a reply and include the text from the USCG...

Do a GOOGLE search for SAFETY STANDARDS FOR BACKYARD BOATBUILDERS and you will find a booklet that tells you all about HIN's and myriad of other items.

Basically if you don't have a transom the HIN must be w/in a foot of the stern, two inches of the deck and on the starboard side...

Secondary location in a not easily accessible area or part of the boat that can be easily removed.

see http://newboatbuilders.com/pages/hin.html

see also http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/boatbuilder/part1/reg33_181_2a.htm for USCG Regs

Basically, if you don't have a transom, like a canoe stern, the HIN must be as near the stern as practicable, on the starboard side within two inches from the top of the hull. It must be permannently affixed and 1/4 inch high or larger.

Also don't forget the hidden HIN which except for location must meet the same requirements.
