A shot from the past weekend at the Independence Seaport Museum's first wooden boat get-together in Philadelphia. It was more of a messabout than anything else -- a great time for all. Everyone got a turn on the sandbagger Bear in the course of the weekend. The Gazela crew opened their boat to those of us who needed a berth for the night -- and fed us well, besides. And there were all the little boats coming and going. It's an event that ought to grow and grow.

Anybody have more shots to add?

Looks like a couple of interesting moored boats at the museum, too.

Would like to see and hear more about it.

Here are some more photos.

A ducker and tuckup early in the morning:

The museum's funky garvey out on the river:

And the centerpiece of the show, the Bear. WoodenBoat did a story on this sandbagger and her sistership, the Bull. It's just one big dinghy. What a hoot! By the way, this is her small rig. She has a bigger set of sails and spars for racing.

The event was a lot like the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival that's held in St. Michaels at the Chesapeake Bay Museum, only much smaller, since this was the first year. The facilities are great for it. The only drawback was lack of a launch ramp. John Brady, the boatshop manager, dropped all of the boats into the basin with a sling off a forklift. It worked fine for the number of boats there this year, but another alternative will probably be needed if the event grows.

Other "interesting moored boats" include: In the first pic, the white ship is the USS heavy cruiser Olympia. Veteran of the Spanish-American War, flagship of Admiral Dewey, the ship from which he famously said "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley." She also had the honor of returning the Unknown Soldier to the US following WWI. Next to it is the Becuna, a WWII diesel submarine. The square rigger is the Moshulu, a steel hulled sailing ship from the far east spice trade and currently a restaurant. Peeking out from behind the "funky garvey" is the back end to the battleship USS New Jersey. She is just a short ferry ride across the river on the Camden side. All are open to tours and all are impressive in their own way. The "members only" tours are even better since they let you go places where the general public is not permitted. More info here...

Perhaps "Ride the Ducks" could lend use of their ramp for a day?

A Tuckup again on the Delaware after some 30 years.

It seemed anyone who walked by, was offered a sail on the sandbaggers. They were very generous with their time in this regard.
