Elbow Bending Session. A heathen religious rite sometimes called a Bacchanalia. A drinking party. What we in the south call a real throw down. :)
I'm teasing you, Kasey. It's a party at Doug and Ms. Carter's house on the Thursday night before the WoodenBoat show. They (Doug and Carter) did this last year to great acclaim, and have kindly offered to repeat the performance. I will have a vehicle at the Whaler and there will be others, I am quite certain. Ms. Margo knows the way. Should be a nice evening.

Well the EBS sounds like fun - and if we make it in on time, we'd love to come! We're staying at a Hindi hotel - I mean an Econolodge - at 251 Greenmanville Ave in Mystic that night - Thurs, Fri, and Sun - and Sat we're staying at the Knight's Inn in Groton. I'll be completely lost, as usual - so if anyone can email or PM me the address to the EBS, I would like to try and get there.

You have some nerve, inviting people to Margo's party with out consulting her first.:D:D:D
It's a good thing for you that Margo operates under the "the more the better" premise when it comes to hosting a party at Chez Lefty.

My apologies for the intrusion.
Kasey, lots of insider jokes here. Let me assure you that if Doug' (MrLeft8) invited you, you are guaranteed a good welcome, he and his wife Carter redefine the word "hospitality".
Icould explain the insider stuff, but I cannot always get around it, but basically: Margo (Concordia<variable dots>41) knows of the hospitality of Lefty and Carter and so feels free to invite people, she is pretty hospitable herself.

My apologies for the intrusion.
Kasey, you are definately more than welcome. The reference to Margo, is a running joke from last year. It seems Margo planned the 2007 EBS at Lefty's with-out the full knowledge and written consent of Lefty and then posted directions to the EBS on every fence post in the area (if you believe Lefty, and that's a big if).
The 2008 EBS is shaping up to be a great event and It would be nice if ther two of you could make it. We would love to meet you and get to know you.
Any statements preceded by green smiley faces should be ignored since they are usually just a feeble attempt at humour (as was my comments to Lefty).

I am just very nervous, because I only came in to this forum a couple of weeks ago, and although everyone has been very nice and helpful, I am well aware that I am not yet "family". I know that you said that in a joking way, but at the same time, I have NOT received an invitation from Margo.
I'm just a wishful thinker, "in recovery" from all those memories I had as a child, and looking for a way to get a little bit of that back - to stand on a deck somewhere and hear the waves lapping, to hear "boat stories" - even to smell salt air, something I haven't done in at least 20 years.
The mere thought of being able to see photographs of the Rose of Sharon (the museum has them in the Rosenfeld collection), or see her design plans, or to see other old boats that perhaps remind me of her brings tears to my eyes.
I don't consider myself a "wooden boat person" in the true sense, because I can't and don't work with wood, and I don't own a boat - my mom does, a sabot, a dugout canoe, and I think a small sailboat - but won't put them in the water because she's afraid we won't take care of them. So I'm relegated to a flat bottomed, aluminum canoe and metal rowboats if I want to go out on the lake or up the river.
I'm unable to sail the Sunfish - too heavy, too clumsy. You should see what I have to do to get in the canoe! I put the stern on the beach, and step in from there - then I slide forward until I'm at least midships, and try to use my paddle to break the canoe free from the beach. With the rowboats, I sort of slide off the dock and reach my legs out as far as I can to get in without rocking the boat too much - my balance is no good, and I will fall if it rocks. So about all I have to offer this forum are memories of a slimmer, less handicapped childhood, and my love for beautiful boats, history, and handiwork.
My son and I looked at the photos from last year's boat show, and have gotten very excited - the photo of the barrel being "shown" as a homebuilt wooden boat was best of show, in my opinion!
I really want to get to know all of you - AND your little inside jokes! - but I am well aware it could take YEARS for that to happen. Until then, I am just a wooden boat orphan, trying to get a taste of what I once loved.

Hi Kasey - consider this as your invitation to Lefty's :D
Frankly, anyone reading this can consider this as their invitation to Lefty's :p. If you need directions just PM me ;)
You see Kasey the "REAL" truth is that last year I'm not even sure how it came about, but a small party was arranged at Lefty's Friday night of the WBS. Unfortunately for him, his wife read about it on the Forum before he had a chance to break the news to her.
I ended up going to Lefty's ahead of time last year (huge long story involving two other Forumites, 10 lbs of shrimp and USless Airways).
Having blazed a trail over hill and over dale to the NW side of the east side of nowhere (and it is way back in the woods), I felt it my duty to print Mapquest directions. So I dutifully found the library in Mystic, printed out directions and handed them out at the WBS. This was simply my good deed / random act of kindness / general need to keep things organized.
This is Lefty (aka Doug)'s face when he heard I was walking around the WBS handing out directions to their house:

Thank goodness Lefty is a good sport (and his wife Carter is an even better one :)).
See you in Guiford!

Kasey, I was sort of in the same spot last year... I'd been lurking on the board the year before, when they had the Wooden Boat Festival in Newport RI and was pretty green with envy that I didn't go that year, once I saw all the photos of people having a great time.
So, the next year (last year) I made sure that I did... though, was still hesitant about showing up on some stranger's front porch... what I found were, indeed a bunch of very strange people, but in a good way, and I was really glad I decided to attend.
If you want to see what you'd be getting yourself into, I have some YouTube videos up from the party... here is one.

"pulled pork" - how totally yankee! I lived in Tennessee for 23 years, and never heard it called anything but "barbecue" until I moved to New York. Now mind you, in California, "barbecue" was a verb, not a noun, and it could mean anything...
I have a car as well, and would be interested in trying to coordinate with others who are going so I don't get lost. It would be nice to "meet up" somewhere and go in a convoy so we don't get lost.
I'll have room for two in my car.
Thank you for the video, Michael - and thanks to everyone who introduced themselves by forum name on that video! Wish I could bring it with me, so I don't forget!

Yes. elf is promising to bring the finest known chocolate cake all the way from Cape Cod. Hoping that it isn't 95 degrees and 100% humidity, since buttercream frosting does not like that much heat.
BUT
elf will bring only one cake, and from the sounds of it, someone else may have to bring something else sweet.

Has elf ever heard of a "cooler"? Generally plastic , insert ice block or cube , put said cake on top of ice , close lid.
Seems they used to have those back east when I was a wee lad. The one my parents had I'd love to have today , all metal said Coca cola , maybe it was just "Coke" , on it even had a bottle opener deal on the side of it. I wonder if my sister ended up with it?

Saturday and part of Sunday only, regrettably. Does anyone know specifics about museum and/or public parking? I hear that there are satellite lots and that taking a bike for getting back and forth may be advisable.

Parking is right across the street from the seaport entrance. It's a good-sized lot, but it does fill, so, get there early if you want a space. Don't know where any satellite lots may be, but, you might find a spot on the back streets and/or in the town itself... then, it's just a little walk back to the seaport.

Thanks, all, I do have transport. Looks like "Da Kid" is deploying earlier than anticipated and must be RTB by 1500 on Thursday, so we'll be free for the no-doubt-interesting task of finding "Chez Noyes". I will be leaving early, tho, since I need to be onsite at the show to open the booth on Friday.

Last year they had a shuttle bus running from the Main parking (across from South Entrance) to a lot about 2 miles away. Ran every ten or fifteen minutes or so. If you get there EARLY each day, you'll be able to park in the Mystic lot(s). (There's also a lot across from the North Entrance!)

I can't make it to the WBS or the EBS but I do have a favor to ask...well two actually.
First- PICS! PICS! PICS!
Second- Hey Margo, When Lefty is talking about St. Augustine Shrimp, is he talking about Rock Shrimp? If so then I need a favor. As you fly over Ash, and you will, could you throw about 2-3 lbs out the window? You see, Tonya and I honeymooned on my Dad's trawler yacht in Titusville and every night for a week we ate grilled rib-eyes and rock shrimp. It's been almost 5 years and we've almost lost the weight we gained that week so we're ready for some more. I can get our local shrimp by catching it myself or buy it locally but there is absolutely nothing on this earth that can compare to those little banded beauties. So puleeeeeze:)

... I just checked on the guitar - refreshed my memory, it's a 6-stringed 12 string Epiphone from the 70's. I'll get a full set for the 12-string arrangement before I leave.
You know, this may be the guitar's 2nd trip to Mystic. It was my real father's - who, in addition to being a "boat bum", is also an anthropologist. He was down there for quite a while doing research on whaling boats, with a grad student who filled the empty hours doing Museum boat restoration work. I'll check with him and see.
Can't wait to see if someone brings a saxophone! My son taught himself to play a little bit .... he was ALMOST as good as Bill Clinton! :D:D That's been a few years ago, though - and he's never had his own - that's one of the things he keeps asking me to get for him ... don't know which is worse, sax or drums in a tiny house!
I'll also bring soda - several different kinds for mixers & whatever.
