View Full Version : Anchor stowage
I've got a 1946 Rhodes 18 day sailor. It has a foredeck. I have been keeping the anchor at the ready by having it tied to one of the cockpit bench seats. This is a good spot to keep it from moving around, but it would be nice to keep it somewhere else. I've been tying off the end of the rode around the mast. The anchor is an 8 lb danforth. Where would you keep it?

I'd be tempted to just drop it into a bucket that lives somewhere just out the way.
Otherwise, get some marine plywood and make a little anchor locker in an out of the way place.

There's no really good answer to this one!
I can't really see how to improve on what you are doing now.
I had an 18ft day sailer 40 years ago and I used to keep my Fisherman lashed on the bottom boards, starboard side, ahead of the thwart, with the rode in a bucket, lashed to the heel of the mast.
You don't want the weight too far forward and you want to be able to get to it.
I'd say you are OK.

I like these chocks to keep a small Danforth from sliding around. I'd screw them down under the foredeck, out of the way. Available from Defender and other places.

Depending on WHERE you sail....
If you think your going to need it and fast, ON the FRONT DECK is the best place for it. Moount it in those chocks shown above...
We has a 19 ft day sailed Lightning... sailed on a man made inland lake...a rather small lake... we didnt bother with an anchor... where wuz we gona go? This was in the 50's and 60's... now the laws might dictate different.

If you have the room, how about upright against the mast ? The line lead below via. a rope deck pipe.

I think upright against the mast might foul the jibsheet. I'm launching today in Unity Pond in Central Maine. I've got everything back on the cockpit seat for now. However....
I've also got a 1957 23' AR True Rocket centerboard sloop that is a community boat under my direction. This boat has a bowsprit. I've seen anchors stowed under the bowsprit, but how do you do that and still have instant access? ...or reasonably quick access....
...I know enough about sailing to keep asking questions...

I keep mine handy aft with the rode flaked so it will run clear. Carrying it up on deck (especially a light eight pounder) when you need it is not a problem.
